Health Care - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Health Care - Health Care And Wellness

Besides its more than 15 medical and surgical hospitals, Oklahoma City has specialized hospitals and federal medical installations. In the past, Oklahoma and Oklahoma City concentrated on treatment of illnesses, but lately the focus has turned to education and prevention. Today, alternative medicine is a grassroots movement and health-food stores and holistic, chiropractic, and eastern arts clinics are becoming known throughout the community.

A 2007 health report for Oklahoma County shows heart disease and cancer are still the leading causes of death. Oklahoma is ranked as the 8th most obese state in the Union, as the 5th most inactive state, and as the 50th in the consumption of fruits and vegetables. Oklahoma’s smoking rate has dropped to a historic low of 25 percent. Public officials feel this drop is due not only to recent smoking legislation but also to the education of the public by health professionals.

In an effort to bring down the obese rate, many programs have been created to get the public fit and healthy. None has been more popular than Oklahoma City mayor Mick Cornett’s OKC Million Program (www.thiscityisgoingonadiet.com). On Dec 31, 2007, he announced a million-pound loss as a collective goal for the residents of Oklahoma City. His goal is to inspire citizens to become healthier and lose weight. People can join the program for free on the program’s Web site and then log on to learn about nutrition, exercise, and how to set realistic weight loss goals; track their weight loss; and contribute to the total weight-loss goal. Since the program’s inception, 29,298 people have registered. There is an average of 13.02 pounds lost per person and total pounds lost as of June 2009 was 368,501.

This chapter lists health departments, hospitals, resources for health care, health-food stores, and some of the alternative health-care options available. It is by no means a complete list and just because an establishment is listed, does not mean it is recommended. Please consider this chapter a place to start.
