17. Soup Revolution

City: Omaha, NE
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (402) 881-7593

Description: Omaha’s first foray into roving food trucks comes with Soup Revolution. The soup is prepared beforehand in a commercial kitchen, and then loaded onto a white van with a blue and grey star logo on the side. The soup van has proven quite popular with downtown Omaha professionals, and there’s often a line over the noon hour. Chef Sara Demars Cerasoli posts the menu for the day on Facebook and Twitter. Soup Revolution also has a partnership with Dundee’s eCreamery, and serves soup for lunch at their 50th and Underwood store each Tuesday. The soup will vary seasonally, and some of the fall 2010 offerings included chicken tortilla, wild mushroom and red rice, chorizo and black bean, red lentil and pot roast stew, and curried chicken and coconut milk.

18. Surfside Club

City: Omaha, NE
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (402) 451-9642
Address: 14445 N. River Dr.

Description: Surfside is a summertime staple in Omaha. There’s barely a menu—diners choose from fried chicken or fried catfish—and decide whether they want to eat inside or outside, and it’s an easy choice when it’s warm. The outside seating area is sparse (as is the inside of the greasy spoon) and lends a panoramic view of the Missouri River. A note of caution: Passengers on boats passing by are prone to lewd gestures, so either take it with good humor, or don’t go to the Surfside—it’s been happening for years and probably won’t stop any time soon. The catfish is grilled tender, the chicken is hot and juicy, and the beers and cocktails are icily refreshing on a hot summer day. Surfside is a once-a-year type joint, but it’s a tradition for many locals.

Telephone: (402) 991-6131
Address: 1620 Dodge St.

Description: A simple sandwich shop serving hot and cold sandwiches, Worker’s Take-Out has a serious following among young Omaha. The restaurant shut down in its original midtown location and recently relocated to share a downtown space with a locally owned coffee house chain. Worker’s signature sandwich is a pressed Cuban, but the menu offers lots of options, including some brand new ones that came with the new location. Worker’s is now serving a Greek chicken sandwich, salsa verde and chips, homemade red and deviled egg potato salad, and in-house created roast beef. Worker’s posts daily specials via its Facebook page and Twitter account; follow both to stay in the know.
