Parks & Recreation - Scarborough, Maine

1. Ferry Beach And Western Beach

City: Scarborough, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation
Address: Off Route 207

Description: A Prouts Neck neighborhood beach, Ferry Beach here is not to be confused with Ferry Beach State Park in Saco. This one is much smaller and much more difficult to get onto, as there is very limited parking. Still, between Ferry Beach and neighboring Western Beach, there are 1,700 yards of sand to be enjoyed. Ferry faces the outlet of the Scarborough River and the summer colony of Pine Point; Western looks out at Pine Point. You won’t think you’re on a deserted isle here—despite some good bird-watching, the vistas tend toward the heavily developed. No lifeguards. Limited facilities.

2. Grand Beach (Pine Point Beach)

City: Scarborough, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation
Address: East Grand Ave.

Description: This is the spot where the beaches of York County meld into the beaches of Greater Portland (it connects to the end of Old Orchard), and it is indeed a grand beach, 2,500 yards of fine white sands. Good swimming, nice views of the tony cottages of Prouts Neck, and there’s a rocky breakwater where people like to fish. There’s a snack bar, changing area, and some parking.

3. Higgins Beach

City: Scarborough, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation
Address: Off Spurwink Rd. (Route 77)

Description: The beach used primarily by the summercators who have cottages in the small village of Higgins Beach, this strand is about 900 yards long and has nice dunes and tide pools. Parking is not available anywhere unless you stay in one of the cool inns nearby. Residents of Higgins Beach have been concerned with all the traffic the area sees and have had erosion concerns as well, but it’s a very pleasant strand if you can find a place to put your car. Surf is good for riding.
