Description: Perhaps one of the more unique festivals held in the area, this event, that takes place on the second weekend of the month, celebrates the logging industry and the men and women who dedicate their lives to making it a major economic powerhouse for the region. After a blessing of the logging fleet, there is a parade, food, arts and crafts, live music, a beauty contest to elect the year’s queen of the festival, and many exhibits designed to educate people of all ages about the significance of logging to northwest Louisiana. In case your GPS is on the blink: travel south on I-49 to exit 162 and turn right onto LA 177 south. After about 7 miles turn left onto LA 175 south and turn right onto LA 120 (about 9 miles). Follow the signs into town.

Description: Celebrate African American heritage, talents, and achievements at this weekend festival, held around Juneteenth (June 19). Hosted by Rho Omega and friends, expect great live music on two stages, art vendors, and delicious food. A wonderful affair for all folks.

Description: Red River Rumble is an open Motorcycle Rally and Music Festival held at the beginning of the month. Last year it offered three nights of mixed martial arts. The poker runs provide a great place to ride, visit with friends, and meet other cycle enthusiasts. Live music on Fri and Sat night, so hop on your bikes and let’s roll!

Description: Held on the last weekend of June, this event rejoices in the goodness of the Ruston Peach, considered a true delicacy in this region. Over 200 vendors will be on hand downtown to tempt you with incredible arts, crafts, and gift ideas while the annual arts and craft show is held at the Civic Center. But much of the action takes place at Railroad Park with live music, food, games, a pet show, and more. And don’t forget the parade and the antique car show. And, of course, there will be peaches, so be sure to sample this ambrosia. Ruston is approximately a one-hour drive from Shreveport–Bossier; just head east on I-20 and look for the signs.

Description: While this event starts in mid-June, it kicks into high gear in July. Open on Sat from 7 a.m. until noon and on Tues afternoons 3 to 6 p.m., during which time you will also experience live entertainment. Vendors sell local produce, baked goods, honey, and fresh flowers. But do not skip looking at the ethically raised meats, wine, coffee, and numerous arts and craft items. Because the produce is local, it will change with the season, so be sure to keep this market in mind if you are in town during late Oct and Nov.

Description: Usually held the last weekend of Sept, this two-day event recalls when oil was struck in the 1930s, becoming one of the largest oil fields found at that point in the area. When the oil spiked, so did the population. But, like all good things, the oil boom ended, leaving this town to reduce in size to its villagelike status. Fri night is a concert and street dance, followed by arts, crafts, food, and fun for the kids on Sat. A good opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and rich hospitality. Take LA 1 north from Shreveport.

Description: This town, pronounced NACK-uh-tush, gained national attention with the film Steel Magnolias, but locals celebrate it as the home of the delicious meat pie: spicy ground beef and veggies wrapped in a fresh crust and deep fried until flaky and golden brown. Usually held the second weekend of the month, with most of the activities on Sat, this event will let you sample meat pies from some of the most notable cooks in the area, enjoy live music, a parade, a car show, a “womanless beauty pageant,” and more. Meet the royalty of the festival and see how to make a meat pie, Natchitoches-style. From Shreveport, drive south on I-49 and take exit 138. Turn left and follow the signs into town.

Description: A smaller, but exciting version of the Louisiana State Fair. As you would expect, this event involves the judging of livestock, jams, home wares, crafts, photography, and more. Occurs on the last week of Sept. The midway offers all the pleasures of a fair: games, rides, and a wonderful time. Popular with children and young adults involved in 4-H as well as locals who love the feel of a fair. The rodeo features all forms of riding; yeee-haw!

Description: An opportunity to remember when this area was settled by the Spanish, the fiesta serves up tamales during the second week in Oct, with the big events occurring on Fri and Sat. Arts, crafts, contests (including a pageant to select the Zwolle Tamale Queen), dancing, live music, and a lot of fun. Of course, when the Spaniards arrived, they were greeted by Native Americans. As a result, their culture is also represented at the fiesta.
