16. Krewe Of Centaur Parade

Description: The date of this parade varies with the day of Mardi Gras but is usually held two Saturdays before Fat Tuesday. Come experience Mardi Gras, northwest Louisiana style. Bring a bag to carry home all your throws. The most fun you will ever have for free. The parade starts on Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport in front of Sci-Port. It travels down the parkway, turns right onto Shreveport–Barksdale Boulevard then left onto East Kings Highway, and terminates at Preston Drive. While the parade starts at 4 p.m., you may want to find a place to park off the parade route and grab a spot at least one hour in advance. Free admission.

17. Krewe Of Gemini Parade

Description: This parade full of floats, bands, and great throws occurs on the Sat before Mardi Gras day. It follows the same route as the Krewe of Centaur parade. Locals debate which one of these parades is the grander; you will need to attend both to voice an informed opinion, but be forewarned: each year these parades grow in both size and spectacle. The parade starts at 4 p.m. Free admission.

Description: While this fair is designed for children 12 years of age and younger, the entire family is invited to attend. Over 3,000 plastic eggs, each containing a surprise, are hidden throughout the park. In addition, there is a space walk in which the kids can jump for hours, live entertainment, games, relay races, and a visit by the Easter Bunny.

Description: On the third weekend of March, Vivian, a quaint town located north of Shreveport on LA 1, hosts the Louisiana Red Bud Festival. When these popular trees burst into bloom, their pinkish-purple color announces the end of winter and provides yet another reason to celebrate. Events include a red bud photo contest, a parade, food, clowns, crafts, a pet contest, and a chili cook-off. A great family event. Free admission.

25. Barksdale Air Force Base Air Show

Description: This two-day event, usually occurring during the second weekend in May, can attract more than 180,000 spectators. When you are not busy looking at the stationary craft, gaze upward to watch groups like the U.S. Navy Blue Angels or the Canadian Forces Snowbirds perform. Greg Pole’s flying antics will certainly provide a thrill, as will all the other performers. Some vintage birds will also make an appearance. And have your photograph taken while seated in the cockpit of an aircraft. Free parking, free admission. All persons subject to a security check. Enter through the West Gate, located on Barksdale Boulevard.

Description: Buenos días señor/señora/señorita! Come celebrate Hispanic culture with food, song, dance, and art. Never saw a Chihuahua dog race? Venga a vermos! (Come see us!) Music styles include mariachi, salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, and reggaeton. A children’s activity area will introduce its participants to the riches of this culture in a fun and interactive manner. A 5-K walk/run is also affiliated with the fiesta. Proceeds from this event allow Latinos Unidos Del Norte Louisiana to offer higher education scholarships to individuals of Hispanic decent while enhancing cultural awareness and community involvement.

Description: A late spring festival, culminating on the third Sat of the month, remembering the history of this town, whose population once skyrocketed when oil was first discovered over 100 years ago. A treasure hunt, pet parade, and street dance lead up to the big day, when the carnival itself begins, with games, food, a parade, and lawn mower racing. A quick trip (22 miles) from Shreveport: drive north on LA 1 to the intersection of LA 538 and take a right.
