Description: Located across the street from Boulder’s Central Park, BMoCA provides a dynamic venue for a variety of innovative art exhibits, including the work of local, national, and international artists. The museum was founded in 1972 by a group of artists to promote the visual arts in Boulder. Over the years the facility expanded and now houses three gallery spaces and a 100-seat black-box theater. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students and seniors and is free for children under 12.

Description: Specializing in glasswork in Boulder for more than 25 years, the studio offers custom design and fabrication, and both architectural and period work. The general approach is architectural, though there’s a selection of beautiful glass items, including blown-glass vases, jewelry, clocks, and imaginative pieces by various Colorado artists. The studio is known for its high-quality contemporary and period leaded, etched, and beveled stained glass. It primarily promotes glass crafts by Colorado artisans. Description: At CU Art Galleries, the large group shows of student work are especially fun and zany—a little bit of New York in Boulder. The gallery also hosts exhibitions by nationally known artists, and there are 5,000 pieces in its permanent collection. Be sure to check out the Sibell-Wolle galleries, which, in addition to student work, also regularly feature impressive work by national and international artists. Description: Stargazers and sci-fi fans will enjoy the small gallery outside the planetarium’s star-show auditorium, which often displays astronomical or futuristic artwork. Take the kids and take it all in—art exhibit and a star show, workshop, or lab. The planetarium is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers public shows on Friday evenings and some Tuesdays and Saturdays. A tour of the gallery is free; star shows are $3.50 for kids and seniors, $6.00 for adults; laser shows are $5.00.

Description: This museum houses the nation’s largest privately owned Western art collection that is open to the public and free of charge. The artwork, all created since 1950, includes original paintings and bronze sculptures. Two monumental (15-foot) bronze sculptures grace the museum’s courtyard and grounds. The collection is a result of Leanin’ Tree founder Ed Trumble’s long friendship with Western artists. Description: The first two weekends in October from 12–6 p.m. are intriguing and fun thanks to Boulder’s own Open Studios Tour. Each fall, 125 of Boulder’s best artists open their studios to the public and feature demonstrations and works for sale. You can buy a map/calendar at numerous locations throughout the city and be on your way. Look for the familiar yellow and turquoise signage that directs you to each studio.
