Description: The University of Colorado-Boulder’s Artist Series has been going strong for some 70 years, with a full season of varied performances. The 2009 season includes performances by the Colorado Symphony with Alisa Weilerstein, the Great Tennessee Monkey Trial with L.A. Theater Works and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The Takacs String Quartet, composed of the series’ Hungarian artists-in-residence, also performs. The Artist Series is held in the university’s Macky Auditorium, Grusin Music Hall, and the Music Theatre in Imig Music Building, and includes performance art, jazz, classics, dance, folk, and ethnic performances. Tickets prices range from $15 to $60.

Description: It began in 1981 as a one-weekend festival; now the Boulder Bach Festival has evolved into a year-round series of concerts highlighting the famous composer’s work. The annual three-day Bach Festival is in January. Lecture series, master classes, youth competitions, and an enrichment program for local elementary schools round out the offerings. The very unstuffy company puts on a lively New Year’s Eve performance with a champagne reception. There are also children’s concerts in March and May, and a fall concert in the more than 100-year-old Ryssby Church west of Longmont.

Description: From late June through mid-August each year, classical musicians from around the country and world come to Boulder to participate in the Colorado Music Festival at Boulder’s historic Chautauqua. Founded in 1976, the series is organized around themes such as “Renaissance to Gen X,” “American Music,” “Romantic Refresher,” and “Baroque to Bel Canto.” There are several children’s and family concerts, too. A Boulder Fourth of July tradition is the Colorado Music Festival’s free concert on the Chautauqua lawn, highlighted with foot-thumping John Philip Sousa marches. The festival’s music director, Michael Christie, is just one year older than the festival founded by Giora Bernstein. Season tickets are available in advance, or concertgoers can pay at the door.

Description: For more than 60 years this spectacular natural-rock open-air amphitheater is the venue for most top performers who come to the Denver area. Performances by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; R.E.M.; the Dead; Coldplay; Toby Keith; and Counting Crows are just a few of the bands that have played (sometimes yearly) at this magnificent venue. Description: From Paint Your Wagon and South Pacific to the hilarious Midlife, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre is the only local venue for popular musicals. It has won a number of awards for its professional performances with excellent sets and staging. The theater offers cocktails and a choice of delicious dinners (the prime rib is great!) served by its talented singers and performers. Description: Since 1951, Nomad has been providing community theater in a Quonset hut “Just a little off Broadway”—Boulder’s Broadway, that is. The theater was completely renovated in 1998. Former Boulderites, Joan Van Ark of Knot’s Landing and Larry Linville of M*A*S*H, both got their acting start with the Nomad, which hosts some excellent serious and not-so-serious drama.

Description: Considered by local critics to present the most consistently good and reliable performances, the CU-Boulder Theatre Department won the 1993 Denver Drama Critics Circle award for Best Season for a Company. Throughout the school year, this university department holds numerous performances at campus theaters.
