108. The Hungry Toad

City: Boulder, CO

Address: 2543 Broadway

Description: This is Boulder’s original English pub. Four English beers are on tap, and eight are available by the bottle. Fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, salads, and burgers are popular. The food’s not arty, my lad, but it’s hearty, and accompanied by comfortable chatter and a pint at your elbow. The pub is open for lunch and dinner daily.

110. Southern Sun Pub And Brewery

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (303) 543-0886
Address: 627 South Broadway

Description: Mountain Sun on Pearl and Southern Sun in south Boulder are Boulder’s “New Age” brew pubs, with seven made-on-the-premises fresh brews that burst onto the microbrew scene by winning awards. The food at both locations is a winner, too. Most of it is vegetarian, including meatless salads, chili, soup, garden burgers, burritos, and pizzas, so you might call them health-food brewpubs. Both ountain Sun and Southern Sun are open for lunch and dinner daily. No credit cards.

111. Old Chicago

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (303) 443-5031
Address: 1102 Pearl Street

Description: It’s hard to decide whether to describe this spot on the west end of the Pearl Street Mall as a pub that serves popular Chicago-style pizzas or a pizzeria with a whopping beer selection. More than 110 beers are available from the bar, and the deep-dish pizza is buttery crusted and delicious; whole-wheat crust is also available. The main part of the restaurant truly has a pub feel, while the seating in the back is more spacious. There’s also a small patio in the rear. Old Chicago’s stout mud pie has layers of coffee and chocolate ice cream, flavored with Australian Sheaf Stout beer. It’s open for lunch and dinner until midnight on weekdays and until 1 a.m. on weekends; unlike many brewpubs, the kitchen stays open until Old Chicago closes.

112. Walnut Brewery

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (303) 447-1345
Address: 1123 Walnut Street

Description: This was Boulder’s first true brewpub, and it’s still the best. The brewing process is on display here, and you can watch while you drink and dine. The brewmaster concocts six original and seasonal ales, including Buffalo Gold, brewed in small batches to provide a malty, floral happiness . . . we mean, hoppiness. The Walnut Brewery pioneered the practice of donating leftovers from the brewing process to feed happy livestock and to enrich soil in flower beds on the downtown mall. Sometimes, walking the mall is a truly heady experience. Salads, tenderloin, seafood, pastas, and vegetarian entrees help draw the crowds to this distinctive, tall-ceilinged, lively space. The brewery is open for lunch and dinner daily.

113. West End Tavern

City: Boulder, CO
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (303) 444-3535
Address: 926 Pearl Street

Description: This is more a bar than a pub, for it is really basic and ungentrified—just the way fans like it. It serves good basic salads, soups, and plenty of burgers, along with 20 different beers and concoctions from the full bar. There’s live music or comedy five nights a week—sometimes seven. The rooftop, with the view of the Flatirons, is the most popular summer spot at this friendly neighborhood tavern. Open for lunch and dinner daily, the West End closes at 2 a.m.
