Description: Marie’s is open through lunch (a hearty Middle European one at that), but it is at breakfast that this cafe really shines. Pancakes, eggs, and huge pastries abound. None of the regulars, who include medical professionals from the nearby Boulder Community Hospital and assorted medical groups and support services, seem shy about slathering on the butter or piling on the jam. Maybe they know where to get help if they need it! The atmosphere is luncheonette-basic, with bright lights for perusing the morning paper, and suitably efficient service. Marie’s is open daily for breakfast and lunch. No credit cards.

Description: This hip cafe is connected to the Boulder Bookstore. It’s a see-and-be-seen place for the cellular-phone set, especially those who want a little lunch with their coffee. The scones, spelt muffins, and coffee cake start the day off sweetly, and there’s a good selection of salads and other light fare for lunch and supper on a daily basis.

Description: The first shop has been around for about 20 years, but only in recent years has an in-house master roasted the beans. The Brewing Market atmospheres are simple, but they open daily at 6 a.m., and the crowds line up because they love the coffee and the excellent chai—black tea, sweetened milk, and spices. Don’t be misled by the Arapahoe Avenue address; the Arapahoe Brewing Market is actually a half-block off Arapahoe, next to McGuckin’s on the southwest corner facing Folsom.

Description: On the path between student apartments and CU, this conveniently located shop serves all types of coffee specialties and various pastries from local bakeries.
