I live in the city limits and I sleep with my windows open when the weather allows. In fact, we have been doing it a lot the past couple of weeks. It got cold the past few days so I shut them but I just opened my windows, sat down, and read your post.

Most of our crime in this area is less random. If they are after money they are more likely to hit a business than a house and a break in is more likely to occur from someone you know.

But nowhere is completely safe and hasn't been for a long time, if it ever was. Whenever I think things were safer out in the middle of nowhere, back in the day, I am reminded of "In Cold Blood." In Cold Blood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But I love sleeping with the windows open. And our electric bills are crazy cheap here but it doesn't stop me from trying to save a buck, either.

All in all, this is a pretty safe state. We have a couple of areas that skew the stats - and a couple of other things play into that - but I feel a lot safer here than I ever did in Florida. In Orlando, more often than not the helicopters would fly low with spotlights. I thought I was in the middle of the remake of "Boyz in the Hood."

Live in Morristown, which doesn't have that great a reputation to start with. But, after we had just moved into our apartment, which has a garage downstairs, took off for a couple weeks back to where we had lived previous to finish up some business.

Came back, from the trip to find the garage door wide open, who knows for how long. We're like 'Oh rats" (ok stronger words than that but this is a family forum) go upstairs figuring we've been cleaned out, only to find nothing at all had been disturbed.

Turns out the garage door opener had been programed with more than one remote, and another neighbor had the remote. Every time they used their remote our door opened. Re-programmed the opener and no problem since.

Thing was, the door stood open probably about at least a week and no one bothered anything. Guess it's safe to leave the windows open at night.

I have family in Maryville. They say it feels perfectly safe there but would not leave their doors unlocked or windows open. In this day an age your just asking for trouble doing that.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (latest data available is 2008) crime in Tennessee has been going down or staying about the same in all violent and property categories of crime except for one: Burglary. Just look at the leap it took between 2007 and 2008. Don't know when the 2009 stats will be posted.

I think anyone can have an intruder through a window.
Set up a motion detector by your window. Get a dog.
Done and done.

I live in Morristown, have for seven years and never heard of anything (or had anything) bad happen. We sleep with our windows open frequently. No worries here other than the above mentioned rooster, or dogs being able to hear outside critters better and barking- or maybe if a bug comes in a hole in the screen....

The previous owners of our house used to leave the house unlocked all the time. In fact, 9 months after we moved in, we realized that a window in our den had never been locked. Crazy! We have been out of town many, many times before we realized the house wasn't completely locked.

I'd say there are plenty of places that are safe, but as stated before and many times, anything can happen at any time.

I live in the Franklin city limits and have never felt a need to close windows or lock doors unless I'm going to be away from home overnight.
