Dead-on.

I was a crime-reporter up north for years and it is the people you know. The highways are reserved for the local and state cops pulling over people that "have a taillight out" and getting the big drug bust. Rarely do those folks wander into the town to commit a crime. Buddy, Harold's son, who is now a crack head and heard dad tell mom that you just bought that great laptop, will bust down your door while you are out, and bring the laptop to the dope man for trade.

Leave the window open or closed. If they want in, they will get in.

I leave the window open and my dog and I are ready for you to make that big mistake.

Like previously mentioned, most people in TN are armed, even little old ladies, so there is not as much of that going on around here.

You are taking that expression literally, but glad your getting a chuckle out of it. I dont think "everybody knows everybody" deters crime. It is often the ppl that you know that commit crimes against you. My town has a state Hwy running thru it, 2 actually, it is not the strangers passing thru (not much to stop for) that commit crimes here.

IMO generally smaller towns are safer than cities if only for the fact there are fewer people. That has been my experience anyway. Everyone has their own comfort level and will take a level of safety precautions based on that.

Why do you think I at one time had:
four dogs, eight cats & seventeen horses

Now we're down to five dogs, seven cats, six horses, seven chickens and two chicks
