I have not bought any clothes since the age of 40 except socks (which I tear up a lot because I walk a lot), underwear, and hundreds of souvenir T-shirts (which I hardly ever wear, but they are cheap memorabilia. I don't buy even them any more because I have no space to store them; now my only memorabilia are the photos). I wear scrubs about 80% of time. It is not unusual for running to a grocery store or to take stroll in the park, or to hang out in the library, or to do anything really that is not very formal, because Boston is full of hospitals and people who work in them.

You can get away with a lot of Eileen Fisher at a biz meeting or if you must work in the office. It's expensive, but it lasts and lasts. I have had years ever since 2010 where I would only be in the office two days a year. But, honestly wear the older Eileen Fisher stuff working from home too. I definitely bought a lot more clothes when I was heavily engaged In Person at the office (and surrounding the office -- LOL).
You have a point about scrubs. I never question anyone wearing scrubs. I always assume they are going onto a shift or coming off a shift. I may give that a try!!! Sounds cheaper than cotton t-shirts that shrink too much and have to be continually replaced.
Informality is the norm where I live now.
