Ah, someone actually citing the fact that morals are not universal but can differ with each individual.

Refreshing.

Yep, no kidding. How about we ask "Help me out on that, because if each religion does what is right in their own eyes, would each necessarily come to the same "moral" conclusions. Even the whole idea of morality, how or who determines what is moral and what isn't?"

Looking through history, the answer isn't particularly flattering to religion.

Let me get this straight. You don't believe that Atheists are capable of moral values or a worldview, but....you do believe all the mythology that christianity dishes out????

What I meant was: I do not believe there is a set "moral values or worldview" attributed to atheism shared by all atheists.

Atheists, of course, all have moral values, and they all have opinions on the world affairs. But, these moral values and opinions are not in general related to the fact that they deny the existence of God.

Christians, on the other hands, believe their religion provides them with "moral values and worldview".

This highlights a difference between atheists and theists: theists make religion the center of their lives; atheists simply do not do that.

Spot on. Anything other than 'no God- belief' and you are going to get atheists who are disparate. It is true that not having a god - belief does tend to lead the unbeliever into the same conclusions. If there is no god - input, there is only man - made law. The moral codes need to be looked at to weed out the reasonable from the unreasonable.

Oddly, I was just reading the science of discworld 3 - Darwin's watch - and the atheist - or humanist/secular - morality situation reminded me of mathematics. The house in all its elaboration is built first and then you have a look at the foundations. Moral codes ase based on what I can only put down to human preferences, instinctive behaviour - patterns and attempts to give averybody a fair slice - with the lawmakers ensuring that theirs is the fairest slice of all.

The holy books do not need to justify the codes much beyond 'His Bigness' - or the Pantheon of bignesses - says so. Take gods out of the equation and we have to start looking at the foundations and see what's left when the Rot has collapsed leaving a lot of worryingly large gaps.

Oddly I just now posted on the Golden and Platinum Rules and by the cringe doesn't letting people do their thing without interfering (provided that they are not thereby interfering with others) come up again and again?
