The one my friends volunteered at in Colorado Springs was interesting. No requirement to do anything relating to religion (as you mention), although there were various religious 'signs'. But it was also interesting that even though it was owned by the catholic church, some days the kitchen was operated by a couple of protestant churches.
Actually God did destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because the leaders and the rich people hoarded all the goods and could have feed the poor but ignore the poor to starve .......... So God does call His people to feed and clothes the poor

So you think that every person in those two places were evil and deserved to be destroyed.

Or else if they don't he'll kill them AND the poor they didn't feed, apparently.
This business of corporate / tribal / familial / national sin is one of the most obscene features of the OT if you ask me.
Usually that's done for accounting/business/reporting issues. The pastor of a church who has a great shepherd's/theological mind may not be the best one to lead a food pantry or other charitable organization. They're just different things. They have a different focus. But that does not mean that spiritual well-being and provision for it is not as important as filling someone's belly.
A problem with most religions is that some of the faithful think their religions are perfect. Yet those religions are, for the most part anchored to eras that were times of routine violence, slavery, disease, death, and frequent war. Difficult to learn when you already think things are perfect.
One thing I like with religions is that we can choose to help or not. Some secular governments force people give way more than is reasonable.
Some churches do the same thing through social pressure. They misinterpret the tithe on purpose. The 10 percent should apply to any INCREASE, not your entire income. If your income decreases that means no tithe, IMO.

Wait a minute, I thought God instructed people to OBEY authorities, as they were all divinely put into those positions of power?
IS it possible that not every authority figure, or govt is deserving of obedience?
This journal article from the American Academy Of Pediatrics verified 140 fatalities due to conditions of neglect related to religious practices of parents such as faith healing or 'prayer healing'...which, obviously, did not work.
