I don't know exactly why they were laughing, but I would guess it is because guineaus can be very noisy. They will control the bugs though, very well.

I hope the poison ivy works too. I want rocky mountains, lyme, etc. shots as well as brown recluse. Where or what are our wonderful scientists doing these days? They have to create anti-chigger itch, etc.

It is a black widow, I don't know why there are not more pictures of the top side of these spider because if you come across one and get to see the bottom side then it's probably too late...

And guinea's are great watchdogs and chickens are good for the yard bugs. When I had chickens I never had a tick problem in my yard.

Wow! We had tons of 'widows' in CA, and I have NEVER seen one with red spots on it's back! I *officially* rescind my earlier ID! I wonder if there is a regional difference? Need to go study more...

edit: Aha! There are Western Black Widows, Northern Black Widows, and that beautiful specimen of yours... A Southern Black Widow!

Man your right about one thing, chickens can reek havoc on the spide population. Growing up on a farm it was alway fun to watch the chickens "whiterocks" reaction when a spider gets dumb enough to cross one of their paths. The whole barnyard would come alive with mad hens going after it . And they do keep the spiders population under control. I just wonder what its like when a tarantula come in contact with a chicken, that should be fun to watch.

I've seen a rooster take a mouse so I bet the trantula would also lose.

When I saw the rooster go after that mouse all I could do is stand there in shock and then he actually swollowed it! I wish I had a camera for that.

Roblyn, I want to see that photo of your grass spider, if I remember the name correctly. Hope I spelled your name right. I have a headache and can't think.

So it is a southern black widow.

Yel, the laugh with the guineas hens is the noise facter. I can't get my DH to even let me get a chicken due to the noise factors, but then he would have to make a hen house. And he is still working on our house. Last time we got guineas they were full grown, and next thing we knew they were down the road and then next thing we knew we didn't know where they were. Kinda like that.
