the mob is kind of like steel, there used to be enough of both for someone to take pride in. now, there are little tiny bits that still exist, but nowhere near the level that they used to and never will again. the mob that remains is much more subtle and smart about how they operate post-strollo.

yet, a large number of the citizens cling to the mob and steel past when youngstown had something close to significance so as to have anything to hold onto. everyone needs to be special, and for those without the ability to make themselves special as individuals they have to work with ideas that the area provides them. that they were born into an area too late leads them to overcelebrate the past.

The mob used to be very prevalent on Ohio - like 20 years ago. Now its the gangs that you have to watch out for.

You can still find some old school book makers if you know the right people. It is a business to these people, and like it or not they do provide a service. Nothing like fall football and some parlay cards to get you pumped up. Tuesday is settle up day or it's 2 points vig. I also wouldn't recommend dodging settle day. I would much rather deal with a professional face to face than a over sea's internet scam. We still have a few old timers around the Columbus area.

I think there is still a presence in the area.

Namely, a certain family who owns there share of malls in NE Ohio and NW PA, a certain family who owns a "paving" company, and a certain person who lives in Youngstown that owns or did own the SF 49'ers.

This thread is funny to me! The first time I was in Youngstown was 2005. My Dad was like "OMG... watch out for the mafia!" Imagine my surprise when I got there and it was all black street gangs! LoL! Then, I was out there in 2008 and went to the Italian Festival in Downtown Youngstown... OMG!!!! Don't get me wrong, I had an awesome time at it... but geez!!! Every Italian stereotype, good and bad, was represented there! Dean Martin music... men in slacks and under shirts yelling at each other.... sausage sandwiches... women with too much make-up and flamboyant outfits... it was like being on set at the Sopranos!!! After seeing that... yes... I believe there is probably still some kind of mob presence there.

I've got more respect for them, than I do for politiciansm, police departments and churches. Atleast you know where the mafia stands.

There is indeed a mob presence in Youngstown. Especially in the strip club business in the surrounding areas.
