Look behind the curtain. This proposal will help the MTA raise north of $100MM. They’re desperate for money and they’re literally new laws on top of existing laws that they don’t even enforce. They want the money, not more bodies in jail.
How are they going to collect if they don't enforce?

They didn’t enforce, the problem got way out of hand, and now they’re making the fines and penalties harsher. See how that works?

If you think they didn’t let this problem get out of hand specifically so that they could create larger fines under the guise of *the problem is so great we need to get really serious* than I have a bridge to sell you.

It’s a bit like the city not managing traffic properly because it generates added revenue?

I'm with jbgusa. They're still not going to enforce, I think this is just posturing and pretending that they're trying to solve the problem, meanwhile they will just get their money from the congestion pricing and from shmucks like me who still pay their fares

Just because there's a fine for something doesn't mean there's equal enforcement. Like - there's a $250 for jaywalking in NYC, also horn honking in a situation that doesn't call for it has a fine of up to $350

The big difference to me from jawalking etc is that when people enter the subway or bus and don't pay, they're actually stealing and the money has to come from somewhere else (my pocket)

I'm with you. They don't want to catch the serious criminals. Those people often don't pay fares and it's much easier to catch them at the turnstile than in the middle of shoplifting or robbery.

They won’t enforce the jail part because that’s not the true aim. The jail part is to force people to cough up the fines. This is all about revenue.

Two police officers at the station, guy is standing holding the gate open. Heard of people going through. Don't know how MTA is gonna issue tickets when no one cares.

Fines. LOL. Do you think the type of scum that farebeats will care or even bother to pay fines?

I'm with you, I don't think fines will work. So now what?

Human psychology. Most farebeaters are opportunists. They fare-beat because they see others do it and that there are no consequences.

It doesn't take too many people facing consequences, to severely curtail farebeating. Humans, in general, are very herd-like (some societies more than others). This is the way in which societies have been organized for millennia.
