This sounds anti-immigrant.

As an asian american, I wonder my people, like the sheep we are, always vote for democrats. Liberal affirmative action has done nothing but continuously screw over my people since it demonizes our success. We have to be extra-overqualified to apply for anything.

I am wagering though, as in the past, the results will largely be unchanged.

If these schools are so fantastic and the cluster of high performing students works so well, why not expand onto these buildings and increase the size of the admitted class each year. Offering spots to another 500 students is bound to help more of all ethnicities get in.
Test prep for underserved neighborhoods does exist. The DREAM program is designed for low-income students with academic potential. DREAM 2020 Student Waitlist Offer Letters - Specialized High Schools Institute - New York City Department of Education Guidance counselors can recommend the program, but the final decision is the parents. And not all parents of eligible students want to take advantage of the opportunity.

Interesting point. The SHSAT became the sole measure of entry because testing is the only measure that's truly blind. The test doesn't care what color your skin is, what your parents do for a living, or where you live.

So the mayor is saying there are too many Asians in these schools right?

They are the group whose numbers at SHS will decrease if this policy goes through. They have a small percentage in the schools system overall, and not widely spread among all schools, so this system will reduce Asian numbers in SHS.

What a great leap forward. As long as everything looks good visually with exactly the right proportion of different skin colors in the schools - that's the main thing. If we told MLK that in 2018 the color of your skin was the most important criteria for getting into a NYC school - not an immigrant kid's educational merit - I'm sure he'd be perplexed.

Not just that - some cultural groups - of very low income - get together and organize after-school training for the tests. These parents are sub-minimum wage restaurant and dry cleaner workers, many of whom barely speak English. But culturally, they place a premium on this one thing.

There's a reason that schools like Stuy have such a large free-/reduced lunch percentage of kids - its a big lie that SHS entry for those kids only comes down to wealthy parents paying for wealthy test pre. But it doesn't fit a PC narrative.

Seems like deBlasio jumped on the "Make America Great Again" bandwagon.

Stuyvesant grad checking in-

Well something happened after the 1980's because 'Old Stuy' (on East 15th street) had a lot more Black and Hispanic students than 'New Stuy" (in Battery Park) currently does.

Asians migrated to NYC in large numbers?
