Bigjersey, good generalizations with this perspective of S.Jersey. I've lived in Arizona and California the last 25yrs and when I visit this is how I see it. I grew up in the Cherry Hill area (Area 1), my brother lives in Elmer (area 2). I really enjoy visiting this area, it is relaxing, but I think I'm somewhere in the Southern US with the exception of the local accent.
Then I visit some family on the Philly "Main Line" and that's whole other group.
They don't go to the Jersey shore, they go to Cape Cod or Maine!

North Jersey is split into "Greater Areas" too. You have the Greater New York area which is mostly all of Lower Bergen County. Than you have the Greater Paterson area which is eastern Passaic County, the Greater Newark area which is eastern Essex, the Greater Elizabeth area which is most of Union County and The Greater Jersey City area which is all of Hudson County(excluding Harrison, East Newark, Kearny and Secaucus) which all belong to Greater Newark.

bigjersey - What about Gloucester county? In particular Washington Township ( right where the AC expressway starts) about 30 min. from the Walt Whitman Bridge?

I think the main difference is the lifestyle. As other's have said, here in Essex County it's super aggressive and high paced. Down in say, Ocean County, things are a bit more laid back and calm. I go to school in Monmouth County and even it's beginning to change.

Default I grew up in South Jersey , Live in N.Central

Jersey now. Hunterdon County is very beautiful, rolling hills, and an hour from NYC or Philly. South Jersey is very beautiful in a different way..salty pine smell and the beach. Atlantic City area (where I grew up) and OC are MY south Jersey...I still visit there in the summer as much as I can and want my kids to know it well too.

Berlin? I'll have to tell my husband who grew up 5 miles from Philly he ACTUALLY lived in NORTH JERSEY ALL THAT TIME! WOW! All this time he considered himself a South Jerseyite. And my brother in law, lives 2 minutes from the Betsy Ross - "Hey Mike, did you know you lived in NORTH JERSEY!".

This is news to me.

Default both have their merits and drawbacks

North Jersey = anyplace north of I-78
Central Jersey = anyplace in between I-78 and I-195
South Jersey = anyplace south of I-195

Both South Jersey and North Jersey have great places to live. Both also have some really crappy places to live. There isn't much difference between living in Camden and living in Newark. It depends on what you like- if you like mountains, clear lakes, trees, and a more "northeastern" feel, then North Jersey is for you. If you like the smell of fresh pine, tea-stained, slow moving rivers, beaches, and a more Southern feel, live in South Jersey.

Personally, I like both areas equally and for different reasons. Why do you have to choose one and put down the other?

I just moved to NE Pennsylvania this Spring. Thank goodness I can visit New Jersey. It feels more like home (California) to me. I've only visited Northern Jersey locales, I am reminded of Marin County, just North of San Francisco.

i have lived in south jersey most of my life and will never leave! l love it here! if i want to go to the city, atlantic city or philly, they aren't too far that i can't drive there. i don't mind going into the city for a day, but i am not a city girl by any means! give me the laid back country and ocean setting any day and i enjoy every minute of it!
