In South Jersey, Collingswood is known for being exceptionally gay-friendly. However, I think the rest of the state is perfectly fine for being gay-friendly.

If you're openly gay then your're fine in practically any educated/affluent section of a city or any artsy/hipster neighborhood.

The least gay-friendly areas are places frequented by ghetto-acting male youths. Many of them are very vocal about things that they find unusual (like a gay couple publicly holding hands or the presence of a nonpassable transwoman for example) and have no problem shouting something or busting out laughing. They are generally impulsive, have little self-control and were usually very poorly raised at home.

The second place prizes go to the douchy fratboy types and drunk ppl of any demographic/age. Most desperately try hard to impress their friends to look cool and have alcohol clouding their judgement. Avoid ANY large groups of people since individuals are usually way more bold when they're with their friends since they know that they're weak by themselves.

This rule of thumb is true for any state that you live in.

Asbury Park / Ocean Grove and Cape May come to mind.
