We've boycotted all of the casinos in Laughlin and Vegas since the Nevada smoking ban took effect. (Restaurants too!)

The ban is silly...

All of a sudden, it's against the law to light up a cigarette in a casino restaurant...but perfectly legal to chain smoke (if we want to) as long as we're dropping money into slot machines, or playing table games out on the casino floor. Go figure???

No thank you! We'll just stay home and save our money....Claire

Like it or not smokers, your dirty habit negatively effects others. Look for more states to follow suit. In fact, in the next 5-10 years I bet the majority of states will have laws similar to this. You can boycot all you want, but unless you're planning on living an isolated existence, I bet you'll all cave in and just smoke outside, at home or in your car. I'm still amazed at how defensive smokers get over this. You're right to kill yourself does not supercede everyone elses right to breath clean air.

Wow! You sound defensive yourself!

I don't agree with the smoking ban and I was just stating how I felt.

We are extremely self-sufficient people and we can do without eating in restaurants, and don't patronize bars.

When we're unhappy with a certain corporation (such as "Wal-Mart), we stop
shopping in their stores. (Completely!)

Some people may "cave in," but we're pretty "set in our ways." This is the power people have when they live in a capitalistic society....We don't have to go along with things we don't like, or don't agree with, etc.

Some states and cities will start to question their smoking bans when revenues drop off.

Prohibition didn't last....and smoking bans that were enacted in past centuries didn't last either. At some point, people will look for more equitable and fair solutions. Claire

I personally like the smoking ban, I'm an ex-smoker quit in 84, now that I don't smoke I can smell the smokers and really they do pretty much stink even the best perfume can't cover it up. When I'm around smokers even if they aren't smoking I still come home smelling like an ashtray. This smoking ban is protection for your health as well as the protection of others from the smoker. As long as smoker's don't cave in the better the air would be so more power to your boycot. We as non-smokers appreciate your effort.

Great! But now your business has been replaced by nonsmokers who were staying away because they didn't want to breath filthy air.

Not for someone that likes to breath clean air. Smoking is known to cause cancer, so how inconderate of you to push your death wish on others.

Wise choice. You'll likely need that money you are saving. You'll need it for more cigarettes and you'll need it to pay the bills from all the health related expenses you will occur in the future.

Many restaurants, bars, convenience stores and small casinos are suffering in Vegas right now. (Due to the new smoking ban.) Sales have been down. It will only get worse as the year progresses....Non-smokers are not coming in "groves" to replace smokers...

This all affects the economy. Employees are laid off as sales go down. This affects their purchasing power to shop at other stores in a community. The city/county and state will end up losing tax revenue.

Also, the air is not clean...Smog is worse than ever before in Vegas today. There are many factors to consider in this issue...Desertlovers

Let's see some sources. I have heard anecdotes but nothing concrete. I was in to one of the establishments featured in the RJ story Friday night and could not get a machine in the overfull bar next to the backuped dining room.

You of course have a source for your statement that smog is worse than ever? I don't think so...

I think smokers infringe upon the rights of those of us who do not smoke. I don't want to outlaw anything...but I really prefer sitting at a bar where smoke does not drift into my face. It is a kind of assault.

Vegas is our closest big city and everytime we drive up there, the smog gets worse and worse. It even smells. There are red, yellow and rust-colored layers of smog in the sky. (Even in the winter months.) It's really bad.....

There have many articles in the "Las Vegas Review Journal" lately about low sales in bars, restaurants, convenience stores, small casinos, etc. The articles talk about lay-offs and how some places still allow smoking because their sales have dipped so much.

Do some research and you can find these articles too. They are not made-up....Visit Vegas and you can see the smog for yourself. Thanks for writing, Claire/Desertlovers

Of course they are made up...by those who wish to do away with the smoking ban. My personal anecdote indicates at least one of those guys was wrong.

I believe the air pollution numbers get better every year. and have for the last 10 or so. I live here and I look almost every morning. You do get yellow layers over the strip...less often and less yellow than they use to be..

Now put up or shutup...some legitimate source that Vegas pollution worsens.

You made the charge...now make it stick.
