Hopefully we will soon sell our NJ home and will become SC residents. Since that is the plan, I figured I'd start on the process by registering my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix in SC on our next trip to Murrells Inlet. The NJ registration is up in July and it would have to be inspected.
What do I need to obtain SC plates and registration? I would guess the title and NJ registration (and my license). I don't need to have the vehicle physically present in SC, do I? It will probably still be sitting in our NJ driveway in July.........

It is really quite easy. First you have to pay the property tax on your vehicle. You will need that receipt, along with your title, registration, and insurance information to register your car.

An SC drivers license will follow eventually. Not sure if I would switch within 90 days of registering my vehicle though. Wonder if they come looking for you??

A related question: Our other vehicle is a 2010 Terrain. It has a three year NJ registration so I would hate to lose the money I paid the dealer (well, actually NJMV) for that. What are the risks of keeping my NJ plates until they are about to expire?
I am not sure if they would come looking for you but I would think the fact that you didn't comply within the 90 days would be apparent when you did eventually go to get your drivers licenses. The same with the other registration. If a few years from now you go to register the vehicle and they see that in 2010 you registered another vehicle, well then you have some explaining to do. Both scenarios are assuming that the technology exists to spot these infractions. Although it should, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.
Also, when we changed our registration we had to switch to an insurance agent down here. We used Nationwide, and although they are "nationwide" they wouldn't allow us to keep our previous agent. It ended up working out great for us, as our bill was chopped in half.
You could be getting into a very sticky situation and you may want to consider doing all or nothing.
One more scenerio ... If you were pulled over for a traffic violation the fact that you had SC plates and a NJ drivers license would not be hard to spot.
One other thing- when you pay your vehicle property tax, you do this at an Horry County Treasurer's office (if your residence is in Horry County), not DMV. So you go to the Treasurer's office first (in county office building across street from S.C. DMV on 21st Ave in Myrtle Beach), pay the tax, and they will give you a reciept which you take to DMV to prove that you have paid the tax to the county. You will also need your birth certificate. How is the vehicle property tax determined? Book value? What do they need to know?? Make, model, year (all from vin #) and current mileage?
