Actually Verdeojos5, there was a smile on my face and enthusiasm in my heart as I watched our President deliver the State of the Union address last night, and if I was not sitting in bed watching I may have done a little skipping. Unfortunately, PawleysDude is right on the money and the harsh light of day highlighted the ugly truth ... it was a sad reminder that what was there at 8:59 pm last night still remained this morning

THIS to the tenth power! I'm from Georgetown County and I've seen tremendous change along the Strand BUT the schools and "right to work" bull keeps me from staying at home! It's criminal how crappy the schools are. The workers are treated like animals. I'm not kidding or exaggerating. I've seen hotels managers say and do unbelievable things that would NEVER fly in NYC or Vegas where they have union protection. It really is like a big plantation in South Carolina. It's a shame because it's sooooooo beautiful and the people can be lovely when you don't run into a racist doodyhead.

When I saw that that mayor got re-elected it was like being punched in the stomach. Businesses have been packing up and LEAVING and this guy gets more time to jack things up???? I asked around and a lot of people didn't even bother to vote! They are so disillusioned and beat down at every turn that they don't even try. There is a tiny oligarchy that would rather rule in hell than have only a slice of paradise and they are holding everyone back! Don't even get me started on bike week. I was at Reno's bike week and it was phenomenal--so don't tell me they don't come because of the economy. It's the harrassment they've suffered that keeps all of them, Harley and Atlantic Beach, from even stopping in town. I used to love that three weeks of wild fun (sans the raunchy nudity). Reno keeps their folks in line without becoming abusive and so can Myrtle. Alright, I'll stop. I'm working up to a rant!

Reno bike week...really? are you currently living in georgetown county? it's what we call Street Vibrations here. that is what you are referring to I am guessing? I think the bike weeks are much, much different. Somehow we have kept it classy here... in my opinion. nothing like seeing thousands and thousands of bikes in a hotel/casino parking... were you here this last year? where they kicked it off at Grand Sierra with the bike stunts? definitely fun, but I think myrtle was fun as well. just different scenes!

Rant on, Ticatica! In recent years, there has been a seismic shift in MB's political power, with a powerful bloc of affluent retirees now calling the shots, leaving MB's longtime business people out in the cold. These retirees ignore the fact that the bike weeks were going on long before they arrived, but now don't want any noise to disturb their precious evenings. These same retirees could care less whether any tourists show up or if any businesses succeed or fail. One day, they're going to wake up and wonder where all the restaurants and shows have gone. I wonder if they'll figure out who was responsible for destroying them.

The same situation is going on in Murrells Inlet, with new transplants buying expensive homes within spitting distance of Murells Inlet restaurants, then calling G'Town's sheriff every nite, complaining about the "loud music" that was going on long before they arrived. Talk about killin' the golden goose! Look, now you've got me ranting...

Really. Sowwy I didn't use the cute little 'Street Vibrations' name. Check my post again. I said point blank that the two bike weeks are NOT the same. And I also said that I am from Georgetown County but I do not stay there. I work and live around the country. I bs-you-not, I was there this year. I went to Hot August Nights too out in Sparks and I loooved the classic cars. Then I went to the Peppermill's shindig and took pictures and saw the Elvis. Nice guy BTW. I ran into other Southeasterners out there although most were Californian and Midwesterners.

Pawleys Dude, me and my Dad complain about the same thing! Why look for the town that's a magnet for all the areas activities, plop your boring old butt in the middle of it, then whine and complain about all the activity? They could have settled further north in the quieter areas. And who do you think is going to make up all the tax revenue lost when these businesses leave? Where will the funding come from for the school expansion, promotional budget for the boardwalk, updating the infrastructure? These folks are on fixed incomes--they ain't funding it! See, they want to pretend they are in Miami or some other part of Florida. But we can't do what Florida does because we have very unpredictable weather for half the year. We can't command that kind of high rates on hotels and bring in the best national names/conventions. We really can't even provide that level of service because they won't allow a strong middle class to form. You need a workforce that is refined enough to understand what five star teatment is all about. You can't have a staff with rough edges and get $200 a night.

I would loooove to see them make the commitment to pumping in serious money for paying the teachers right and getting the kids competitive with the best districts in the nation. I would loooove to see them drop the draconian labor laws so people don't give decades of their lives to part time, dead end gigs. Bring in casinos! The revenue would be through the roof! No more shlepping off to Biloxi or Atlantic City! People from Atlanta, Charlotte, DC, and Miami would POUR in! SC doesn't have to be subsidized by entitlement programs. Give people their fair share in terms of benefits and they'll work harder and longer! Stop working people until they break down from illness or stress.

Oh yeah, one more thing, before you claim your bike event is classier, I suggest you go to Virginia City next year and watch what goes on. Then we'll talk about how much "classier" your event is!

i was talking about between reno and myrtle. i have to say, I dont find myself venturing out to Virginia City much. not sure what you're referring to as I didn't know they were part of street vibrations. you also dont have a location on your name bar so i didn't know you weren't still living in the southeast. apparently you like it out west just fine, which is great. my little sister is out from Beaufort, SC with my niece and I'm hoping it stays good enough weather and I can take her up to Tahoe!

and Pawleys - i find it ridiculous that locals can't live with a couple of weeks of loud noise for all the financial benefits it brings to the city... it boggles my mind!!

Ok this is a little off the subject but still regarding politics. I stumbled across an poll I thought might get interesting on the political forum so I thought I would share. Don't worry it seems harmless, no one is insulting each other YET.

Is your Political Affiliation in-line with your parents?
