Okay. I'll throw some gas on the fire here------I vacationed/fished in Myrtle Beach not too long ago. One of the first things that struck me was all the families that were there. It was fantastic to see a place that was still family oriented. The beach. The stores. The eating places. All crowded with families. The LGBT crowds now own Fire Island, Key West, San Francisco and many other vacation destinations. I dont personally care what people do in the privacy of thier own homes. And they have the right to vacation wherever they please. But it sure would be nice if at least one vacation destination, like Myrtle Beach, could stay family oriented. But alas, I fear "old fashioned" is going the way of the Dodo bird. Extinct!

I certainly hope so, as long as "old-fashioned" means having one's life controlled by fears, prejudices, and superstitions. I will never see it in my lifetime, but I sincerely hope the human race will someday progress to the point where we no longer feel compelled to judge others based on our own hang-ups.

As one member of a "straight' couple, I strongly disagree with that statement. The cruise ships now own Key West, and they have pretty well destroyed all that made Key West a truly unique world. Prior to that happening, KW was one of the most enlightened, relaxing and fun places to be found in the US. Some of our happiest times have been spent in KW, and one of my few regrets is that we could never afford to live there. MB is far too tangled up with petty politics and its own set of prejudices to ever "risk" becoming another KW.

My life is in no way controlled by any prejudices. However. Where I spend my vacation money IS controlled by what my children may or may not be subjected to. When I was a teen we went to Fire Island on vacation. While walking to the beach we came over a hill only to find Steve on his knees pleasuring another man. Not what my little cousins needed to see. Odds are families will not have to see such a thing if a place stays relatively "straight." But to each thier own. Right?

Amen to that! I loved Key West, but the hundreds of tourists the cruise ships dump on Key West everyday have turned it into just another junky tourist town. I hope Charleston is paying attention to what can happen to their town, as they continue to add both cruise ships and casino boats.

hmmmmm So the problem you had with your encounter was that is was "Steve" and not that two people were taking "public display of affection" to an extreme? So it would be ok if it was Mary?

All of us over 7 or 8 years old are controlled by our prejudices. The important thing is how many can we avoid passing on to our children.

Couldnt of said it better myself. The LGBT community only wants to be afforded the same rights as straight people. In no way, shape or form are we wanting the right to have sex in public. What Steve and his partner did in no way reflects what the LGBT community is striving for. Myrtle Beach is very family friendly tourist town. The funny thing is though as a resident of Myrytle Beach for the past four years Ive heard about numerous straight couples having sex in hotel pools, hotel balconys, in cars and on the beach. Ive yet to hear about a gay or lesbian couple caught in the act out in public. As a bisexual I think hanky panky and all that other stuff should be done behind closed doors. A brief kiss, hugging and holding hands should be acceptable in public. It shouldnt matter if the couple is straight or not. I acknowledge tourism is the life blood of the beach and people are entitled to spend there vacation dollars where they feal comfortable in doing so. For the most part the small LGBT community in Myrtle Beach likes to stay off the radar and live peacefully on the beach.

After reading some of the incredibly offensive comments on this thread I can tell you that my partner and I will definitely not be vacationing in Myrtle Beach. We are by no means the type to have public sex, or even engage in PDAs, but we also know that we shouldn't have to be "off the radar" when we're on vacation. We just want to be ourselves, and we will happily spend our money someplace that doesn't require gay people to stay in the shadows just so it can say it's "family friendly." Newsflash: It's 2012 and lots of gay people have kids, and lots and LOTS of straight people have public sex and inappropriate PDAs. But apparently that's OK, since it's straight sex. Enjoy your hypocritical little world, Myrtle Beach.

My apologies for the "narrow minded" folks on this forum... I am appalled and think you and your partner as very very smart to vacation somewhere else....unfortunately, this is the south and things change so slowly if at all...I am by no means a southerner but "doing my time" LOL..here in Myrtle Beach...biding time until we can move...made a bad decision to move here...but anyway..I digress! Enjoy your vacation...I have many many friends who are lesbians and vacation in Provincetown....very cool place I hear! Best wishes!

Rehoboth Beach, DE area is quite gay friendly. Lots of very good artistic places around. You probably would find more to you liking there.
