Also looking for a good breakfast joint, up here we have these Mom Pop restaurants where you can sit and read the paper, that serve 2 eggs, toast, hash browns, and sausage, or ham for like $4 bucks, anything like that the locals recommend?
We really like Eggs Up Grill. Reasonable prices, friendly staff. At least, the one in Conway/Carolina Forest area. Can't speak for the other locations!
My husband and I are seriously thinking about moving to a warmer climate. Myrtle Beach is number 1 on our list. I am a teacher and my husband is in the Auto Business. Do you recommend a couple like us to move to MB?
We love the beach and we know that pay is low as well as the cost of living, but we're from NY where the cost of living is very high and the pay is decent.
If you hope to work as a teacher down here, the future is not bright. Layoffs have dominated the local education scene for the past few years. Overall, it's safe to say that SC is not a leader in education...
A couple articles worth reading:
SC may lose $143 million in federal education assistance (http://www.thestate.com/2010/08/17/1422178/sc-does-not-qualify-for-143-million.html - broken link)because the state no longer meets minimum education funding requirements. Some of our congressional reps are trying to fix this situation but the majority are remaining quiet, presumably because the don't believe in "bailouts".

Every state is facing problems, I mean I just had a poster in my home state go on and on about the abysmal state of Nevada... I mean come on folks, it's all in what you make of it. yes Nevada is highest in a lot of things, including unemployment, and facing massive cuts and probably higher taxes (possibly on food!!!! OMG) considering we don't have income tax they are trying to get it somewhere.
But unless you are moving to Texas or South Dakota, just be prepared for that and it sounds like you are. I would move back to SC in a heartbeat... but I do admit it is missing A LOT of things that I feel like the "real" world has. However, living there felt like a vacation ... I mean people save up their money all year to go there on vacation. I just really thought it was a cool place but mostly because I lived across the street literally from the beach. ... can't beat it.
to Frozen - I am curious if your sons liked Landmark? when I first moved there, I actually LIved at Landmark for 3 months... pretty crazy, but I loved the indoor lazy river and the swimming pool during the winter and PS the original thread was started years ago so not sure the guy you were referring to even comes on any more...!
My wife and I will be moving to Myrtle Beach this month and wondered if anyone could give us any advise about living there. I will be managing one of the Harley stores and will be living in an area called Deerfield. We have only been to MB one time and that was for my interview. My wife is an RN of over 20 years and will be looking for a job also.
As those above said, fairly poor wages. Mostly service industry. Almost no manufacturing jobs. I just moved here as a professional and am very pleased with the quality of life. Apartments seem very reasonable, grocery bill is about on par with other areas of the country. People are friendly. I am not a big fan of the "tacky beach town" (please don't take offense) feel, but I've decided to embrace it. You have to love the the tacky. . . embrace the tacky. . . .be one with the tacky. Slowly but surely it wears on you and forces you to like it. Off season is great! I love just walking into any restaurant and having a seat available.
You will love it if you are into the "SUCK BANG AND BLOW" MOTORCYCLE lifestyle. Thats what I was told when I inquired about moving to the area.Sounds exciting for sure......
The Beaver Bar and Suck Bang Blow suggestions are only for certain posters who are looking for hot women.
For the OP. I second the idea that certain parts of Deerfield, particularly some of the condo areas, can be a bit sketchy. The sections with regular single family homes are nice. The speedbumps make me crazy though. Work as an RN should not be difficult to find either.
