This is kind of an entertaining article I read a couple weeks ago basically saying that the NFL doesn't really care if anyone moves to LA, they just like having that threat sitting there to given them leverage/blackmail when trying to get other cities to upgrade their facilities:

In the short term, I certainly can see the threat having maybe even more value than if they put a team back in there at least until some of the other stadium issues get resolved one by one. The more that some of those apparently get settled (San Fran, Jacksonville) the pressure it will exert on the fewer remaining teams like Minnesota, San Diego, Oakland, St Louis) increases. I can just picture those sneaky owner bastards sitting around the sneaky owner's banquet table rubbing their hands and giggling about their diabolical plans of world domination.

No. As far as I know it is still the site preferred by the Vikings.*

Another thing to realize in this is that the StarTribune owns a bunch of land around the Metrodome and would most likely make a pretty penny if the Metrodome site was chosen. That makes them a bit more unbiased than you would like to think.

*Some of the other history that kind of relates to the Arden Hills site. The Vikings were close to a deal with Anoka County for a stadium in Blaine (a few miles north of the Arden Hills site). Anoka County and the Vikings had an agreement that the Vikings would not negotiate with other locations (trying to prevent playing one location off another). Anoka County eventually found out that the Vikings were negotiating with Minneapolis. Anoka County pulled completely out the next day. I wouldn't be shocked if the Arden Hills site was in reality being used the same way (to extort more money/concessions out of Minneapolis).

As the legislature conducts the funding hearing today, it's encouraging for this Arden Hills proponent to realize that the strategy that the Minneapolis contingent has adopted is "we don't really want it" as they fail to even come up with a single suitable site or engage the Vikings in any meaningful discussion as prodded to do so after last week's hearings.

For anyone who wanted a more accurate recap from the State Senate hearings than the Strib was willing to present, this piece by Doug Grow presents a few of the more relevant takeaways from those hearings...

So far I have to say I like the less expensive Metrodome site with city of Minneapolis funding along with state funding from a combination of pull tabs, racino and the Block E casino. Get it done!

Just build it.

I argued this in 2005 and 2006 about the new Twins' stadium. I knew it was inevitable, so I agruged for the most feasible, cost-effective plan. I feel the same way about the new Vikings' stadium. I think it's going to happen one way or another, so let's just be adults and figure out a smart way to do it.

so why is the metrodome, built in 1982, already in need of replacement while Lambeau field in green bay was built in the 50's and continues to get upgraded? I've never been to either so I'm just wondering...

I If I lived in MN I'd support a small sales tax increase to pay for it. People are cheap these days.. it would probably be under 1 percent and impact people very little.... probably only 0.1%.. Though I guess if a person does not like sports period, I can understand why they wouldn't want to pay the tax.

Looking at this list, it looks like the bears stadium is perhaps the oldest in the NFL with the least seating capacity, never been to that one either. Most teams had new stadiums build in the last 10-15 years.

Well, Lambeau just had a huge renovation, as did many other stadiums built that long ago, ie- Soldier Field.

The reason why non-Sports people don't understand the stadium issue is because A)They've never been to the Dome...or B) have never been to any other stadium.

The Metrodome was cheap skated back in the late 70's. The name of the game then was "Build it cheap, affordable, all-in-one multi-purpose stadium." Professional Sports (more notably NFL football) hadn't reached it's popularity yet. Back then only "Primetime" games were on TV. Chew on this- The NFL franchises of the NFL split up $$$9 BILLION annually. We're not just talking about "sports" or a "child's game". It's a multi-billion dollar industry.

So, the Dome was built quickly and as cheap as possible. It's facilities are outdated. The things that drive revenues at stadiums are outdated- such as vendors, merchandise stands, even Jumbo screens (The Screen is 1/9the size of the new one at Target Field).

The HOME PLAYERS have to park OUTSIDE in a Lot, WALK around the gate into a long dark tunnel. Then take an open-faced elevator down into the basement where they have a Locker room smaller than the Gopher's and even some D2 college football teams.

From the spectators standpoint,it's dirty. Old. The seats are uncomfortable. There is crappy views. The speaker system is like listening to the radio in a tin can. Even the lighting is inadequate.

All around it's just an old outdated stadium. It takes a real sports fan to understand this. When the Dome was built, the NFL wasn't what it is now. There were a few penny-pinching Swedes up here that thought "Gee wiz, a cheapo stadium built for tractor pulls and monster trucks and dirt bikeracing and baseball and football and boat shows and high school football and NCAA basketball and concerts and wow geeze this thing is gonna be darn tuten!".. IN reality these types of multi-use stadiums are a complete waste of money, ie- kingdome in Seattle, Astro Dome in Houston (Both imploded) and Superdome and Georgia Dome are next.

We'll just take a look at each team's stadium and date opened :: (Dome opened in 1982)

NY Giants and NY Jets - 2010
Redskins - 1997
Cowboys - 2009
Saints - 1975
Chiefs - 1972
Broncos - 2001
Dolphins - 1987
Panthers -1996
Browns - 1999
Packers - 1957
Bills - 1973
Chargers - 1967
Falcons - 1992
Texans - 2002
Ravens - 1998
49ers - 1960
Eagles - 2003
Titans - 1999
Patriots - 2002
Jaguars - 1995
Buccaneers - 1998
Bengals - 2000
Steelers - 2001
Lions - 2002
Cardinals - 2006
Raiders - 1966
Colts - 2008
Bears - 1924

Out of 30 other stadiums that AREN'T the dome, 7 Stadiums have been built before the Dome. Only one is a similar type stadium , Superdome, and with all the Superbowls that thing has hosted it's made it's money over 10x. The other 6 are PURE football stadiums and all have seen multiple renovations.

The argument of "What's wrong with the Dome!?!?" is just stupid.
