North Minneapolis is a fairly large chunk of real estate, that contains some desirable locals as well as places to just down right avoid-and everything in between. To lump the entire region as a criminal abyss is flat out ignorant. As stated correctly, it does very neighborhood by neighborhood and in some instances-block by block.

South Minneapolis is the same, although not as bad west of I-35. I currently live in Uptown (I have lived in five other locations through out S. MPLS) and it is definitely not the pristine neighborhood that some would like to think. Keep in mind that Calhoun Square was a very rough spot some 20 years ago, and South MPLS, in general, once had a bad rap. But that is just how S. MPLS is; you can have home owners, working class families, punk rockers, a gang house/or hangout, a crack house and someone flying a rainbow flag all on the same block.

Welcome to the South Side.

I really laughed out loud when I saw that picture; there isn't anywhere in the Twin Cities that looks like that! Yes, there are places with graffiti; but any cars THAT old here in MN would be total rust buckets from the winters here! Then the bags of garbage on the corner? Not here! The old buildings aren't anything like Minnesota's architecture; nor would MN have streetfront stores that are lower than street level --can you imagine how that would work with winters here?

K-Luv, I have to disagree with you about Calhoun Square 20 years ago. I lived near there 20 years ago; Uptown was very vibrant and safe then but also an area that attracted a lot of colorful people (mostly suburban teens who wanted to be seen dressed up in wild hairdos and black clothes). We would sit in Calhoun Square near the kddy drop in center and watch these teens go into the restrooms there looking "normal" and come out looking pretty wild. It was great entertainment for us!

It wasn't safe 30 years ago; it was pretty much blighted and run down, and back at the end of the 70's it was also pretty much a rat-infested run down jumble of slum-lord buildings.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHERE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN? IT COULD BE ANYWHERE...IN FACT TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE SOME AREAS OF SOUTH SIDE CHICAGO. THE MAIN POINT HERE IS THAT NORTH MINNEAPOLIS IS CRIME-RIDDEN, SIMPLE AS THAT. I JUST HAD TO MOVE OUT OF THERE, OUT OF SHEER DESPERATION. I WAS IN JORDAN NEIGHBORHOOD FOR 6 MONTHS. I MOVED FROM OUT OF TOWN IN THE MIDST OF THE WINTER AND IN A HURRY FOR A NEW JOB. DID NOT REALIZE WHAT I WAS DOING...I WAS QUICKLY BURGLARIZED AND I QUICKLY GOT OUT. 42% OF GUN SHOTS IN MINNEAPOLIS ARE SHOT IN JORDAN, CHECK THE 4TH PRECINCT WEBSITE AND QUIT SPECULATING. THE AREA IS NEGLECTED BY THE LOCAL ADMINISTRATION AND WHEN THE POLICE IS CALLED IN THE AREA, THEY SHOW UP AN AVERAGE OF 45 MINUTES LATER...I BET BECAUSE OF TOO MANY CALLS!!! THE BUS OVER THERE (NO. 5) IS GANG-BANGERS RIDDEN AND OFTEN YOU FIND YOURSELF "ESCORTED" BY POLICE OFFICERS. SO, IF YOU CONSIDER MOVING IN THE TWIN CITIES, STAY AWAY FROM THE AREA.

Could someone tell me what the approximate boundaries are for North Minneapolis?? My 22-year old daughter is relocating to the Twin Cities and we don't know where to look for apartments.

Thanks!!

Just to clear up the mystery. That picture was taken on the corner of Lenox Ave on either West 120th, or West 119th St in Harlem, Manhattan, NYC in the early 1980's.

My older brother and I just got one of the best laughs of our lives from that one.

Why don't you Minnesota people please stop talking about how bad the north side of Minneaplis is beacause it's not that really bad. I mean compare that to the southside of chicago or the eastside of detroit and minneapolis looks like disneyland. And another thing...CHICAGO and DETROIT have been the murder capitol several times in the last 30years while the twin cities has never been close to it. I'm not bragging...I'm just telling the truth.
