I'm a white non-Hispanic, from a Midwestern family that grew up in Miami and I loved it. You can speak nothing but English and do just fine 95% of the time. As others have said, mindset goes a long ways. Standing on a self-righteous principal about English is fine and dandy but not the least bit pragmatic.

My suggestion? At the very least, learn some basics. Formal and informal greetings, how to order food and read a Spanish menu (because you don't want to miss out on the awesome cuisine found in so many hole in the walls), etc. It's very simple and goes a long ways towards fitting into the strange amalgamation that is Dade County.

Also, depecantique: I grew up in a neighborhood with about a dozen Asian families who were bi and tri-lingual. They were great neighbors, their kids fit in very well with the neighborhood and the stereotypes they dealt with were the opposite of what you described of your German experience; Asian children were believed to be straight-A students from professional families.

My experience is from going to community college and working in the bar scene. It seems like non-hispanic whites usually do integrate with the Latin community, especially the American born Hispanics.

Especially in the campus setting, whites and Hispanics were pretty integrated with each other and there is a lot of interracial dating.

The same in the bars I worked at.

Well, mainly you're factually right, definitely. But there are a few exceptions to the rule.

Back in the day, when I lived in a normal low-rise (it was nice though, few issues) in Dadeland, just east of the US-1, they were there in pretty significant numbers. Something like every 1 person out of 4 or 3 were Asian or of Asian descent. All of them were nice friendly folks (as most people in the complex).

Considering many (most?) Hispanics are white, would it be more accurate to state "inter-ethnic" dating?

In 2013, as a white, non-Hispanic American, I am part of voiceless minority in Miami-Dade.

Many of Miami's Hispanic residents are biracial.

Voiceless? Don't tell me those hispanics already removed voting rights for white non hispanics. Please call the White House and report this injustice.

Many non-hispanic whites are actually Mestizo as they have Amerindian blood in them. It's common to hear people saying they have Cherokee ancestry.

Voiceless in that candidates for local elections in my voting distict aren't really interested in dealing with the non-Hispanic voter - I often get campaign literature in Spanish only. The 'pandering' is strictly for the Hispanic vote.
