Maryland is essentially the southernmost Northern state and the northernmost Southern state. There are a few other states that are the same way, but Maryland seems to be the most quintessential exchange road of both regional cultures.

I know this because I was born and raised here in PG County. We have our own accent, don't like being too far from the water ourselves, our own state of mind, our own contributions to music especially locally, most of us religiously swear by seafood, lacrosse is popular down here, etc.

Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Calvert County, Charles County, and Frederick County, we are all Marylanders at the end of the day, we just identify more with DC culturally and be in our own distinct world, just Marylanders living in the Baltimore region are. Not all of Maryland is monotonous in culture after all.
I strongly agree that whatever local culture the DC area has, it is primarily tied to the non-transient, black population. Unfortunately, that local culture is becoming increasingly marginalized in the DC area IMO.

Honestly, it doesn't really surprise me that someone like BJYankee (who's not even from here btw) make such a "brilliant deduction" on Maryland culture.

If one wants Maryland's take on Appalachian culture, we got that.

If one wants Maryland's take on Maritime/Seafaring culture, we got that.

If one wants Maryland's take on Northern and Southern cultures, we got that.

If one wants Maryland's take on Black culture, we got that.

If one wants Maryland's take on International culture, we got that.

If one wants Maryland's take on White-Collar and Blue-Collar culture, we got that.

If one wants to experience America In Miniature, come to Maryland and see how we do it.

If you want to experience quintessential Maryland culture, I'd definitely recommend either Anne Arundel County or Baltimore County. However, practically every county and jurisdiction in Maryland represent the state's culture in their own unique ways. There's plenty of cultural identity to be had here like most states in the country.
Rep for the good post. This sums it up pretty well.

BTW, Montgomery County has the most international culture in all of Maryland. You can find just about every kind of national and ethnic cuisine here.

Define identity. You have repeatedly said that New York City has a predominantly italian-irish identity. And yet the fact is that New York City is 65% latino, black and asian.

I've never said that NYC has a "predominantly Italian-Irish identity." I've said that Italians and Irish are a significant part of the city's identity along with Jews, Puerto Ricans, West Indians and Blacks. But in terms of basic things I would say comprise New York's identity, I would say pizza, bagels, bodegas, hip hop, salsa music, etc. Those things are quintessentially NYC, imo.

In Philadelphia, I'd say soft pretzels, water ice, Rocky, cheesesteaks, the mafia, hoagies, pizza (as abundant as NYC though not known for it), boxing and soul music. In boxing circles, and sometimes outside of those circles, Philadelphia is hailed as "the Fighting City," and the city even has a boxing style named after it (the Philly Shell).

That's what I mean by an identity.

Hey thanks And I agree, I'd say northern/central/northern Inner Beltway PG County, Montgomery County, Howard County, and southern Baltimore County form something of an 'International Belt' within Maryland.

You got Ethiopians, Chinese, Koreans, Peruvians, Salvadorians, Hondurans, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Puerto Ricans, Guatemalans, Irish, Senegalese, Nigerians, Kenyans, Jewish, West Indians, Jamaicans, Vietnamese, Russians, British, Germans, Sierra Leoneans, Indians, Pakistanis, Greeks, Iraqis, Italians, Poles, Cameroonians, South Africans, Tanzanians, Ghanians, etc.
