That sounds about right for the area.

Centereach has plenty of retail to keep the taxes in line.

Def true, we have to deal with MCR, but the retail does help keep the taxes down a bit.

Seems like LI is becoming the catch basin for those who cant afford NYC these days.

Remember when moving out to LI meant you had money?

NYC is pricey, but the suburbs will always draw families. A lot of people grow up on LI, live in the city after college and then come back here when they have kids (or start thinking about having them)...it's what they know and deep down inside the idea of raising kids in the city is scary to them!

No! Regular old 6 story brick building in Kew Gardens. When we bought 5 yrs ago the maintenance was $700 a month. I guess I was thinking of your white flight article when I mentioned this. Plus there were a million other things we got nickled and dimed on- annual assessment, fees for having an air conditioner ($75 per unit!), holiday tips for staff, etc. it just added up and for a family of 4, it makes more sense for us to pay the 1k a month and get good schools than to pay for school on top of the 1k a month.

Silver lining: Once the children are out of school, you will still have relatively low taxes when compared with everyone else.

I voted under...but not by much. Amazing the number of 10K listings on MLSLI. It even looks like the lower taxed areas aren't immune anymore.

I'm in Fort Salonga, Town of Huntington. 5BR house, although not a large one, on .33 acres. $8400 before STAR. I am feeling very lucky right now!
