High school grade inflation is rampant.

That is why so many of the most selective colleges eyeball board (and AP exam) scores when selecting the academic kids.

(Impossible for the most selective colleges to compare kids from different schools via GPAs given varying levels of inflation AND ranking has disappeared from most high schools AND letters of recommendation are universally laudatory...the prudent parents/kids focus on the national exams if the target school is most selective.)

And there's been a ton of downplaying the state tests because they "put unnecessary strain on the kids..."

I don't care what they got - it's challenging for sure, and good to know where they stand - but that is the point. I have them do it not every year but enough times that it leaves an impression...

Less than half the kids take it. Over-protective parents are not doing their kids any favors in the long run.

Part of this is because the SUNY/CUNY system has a poor reputation and perception. It's improved greatly of late as private school costs have skyrocketed, but its pretty amazing/sad how bad NY state school are considering NY's wealth and population.

If you are in California, you can go to elite state schools like Berkeley or UCLA and even some of the Cal State school are decent.
If you are in Michigan, you can go to UMich/Ann Arbor.
If you are in North Carolina, you can go to UNC Chapel Hill.
If you are in Virginia, you can you go to UVA.
If you are in Texas, you can go to UT Austin.

The branding and rep of SUNY hurts its appeal to LI students. NY doesn't have any "public Ivies" or top tier public schools...maybe Binghamton.

In Georgia, most are thrilled to go to UGA or Georgia Tech. And with the HOPE scholarship anyone with a B average in high school gets a huge tuition break.

Cornell is quite literally a ‘Public Ivy’ for high achieving New Yorkers.

BTW Residents of VA can also aspire to William and Mary (some folks don’t know that well-regarded ‘public Ivy’ is a state school in the VA system ).

As a caveat to your SUNY generality one should be aware that plenty of top flight science/math (and pre-med types) NYers now eyeball, apply, and attend Stony Brook University. Interestingly, a good percentage are bright NYC kids from the very top public schools. (The word is out about SBU and of course the price is right.) This is quite a change from 20 years ago.

(FWIW Binghamton and SBU are tied in the most recent USN&WR ranking and SBU is ranked well above Binghamton in the most recent WSJ rankings).

It is also true there is no single and dominant SUNY campus center in NY.

The Stonybrook Medical School is attracting a lot of interest too.
