I have never driven to Florida and never plan to. I have a 5 hour butt after that it's on a plane for me.
Its really not that bad of a drive if the car is comfortable. When I'm driving long distance, the key is a box of Honey Nut Cheerios and Arizona Ice Tea, with those 2 I can drive all night

I used to drive to Orlando three time each week from Carlisle, PA. I drove truck with a partner (one driving with the other one sleeping). If I recall correctly I think we averaged about 5600 mile/week. Most of the time we drove down I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. I liked the sightseeing on those routs (at least I-81 and I-77). Orlando, minus breaks, was about 12 hours from Carlisle. Miami was about 16 hours. Of course you would have to factor in how long to get to Carlisle from LI.

Yeah but my DH has a bad back and can't sit too long. 5 hours or less is our limit. A plane ride is easier and less time.
My sister did about a year ago. She didn't get a sleeper car....I think the seats recline and have footrests in the regular cabin. Brought a blanket and pillow and she was set. She was traveling alone and couldn't face the drive by herself.
If you're one of those like me, who prefer to stop and sleep one night halfway through, I always like to stay in Rocky Mount, NC. There's a really nice and very quiet Holiday Inn that I like to stay at when in Rocky Mount.

My husband hates to fly, so this is a good option. As long as the seats recline and have foot rests, we should be OK. Those roomettes are not cheap!
