OK Nostradamus, just when will this collapse happen and what will take place? Will the government sell Illinois and its residents to China. Enlighten us please.

People forget that taxes are not the only cost of living. Your largest expenses are normally housing and transportation. Housing is a lot less here than many cities. Transportation is less in many cases: better public transit than most of the country and competitive airline market

Core Government services will continue to deteriorate and collapse across Illinois: https://www.illinoispolicy.org/pension-costs-ravaging-rockfords-budget-as-leaders-consider-police-and-fire-cuts/
Police officers, Firefighters, Teachers and other government workers better get ready to be laid off.

I own property in the Metro East, where values have rebounded. It's not red hot by any means, but it has recovered from the real estate crash.

I can only compare to MO, based on personal experience. And I'd say the cost-of-living is essentially equal between Illinois and Missouri in the St. Louis area. Illinois has lower income taxes, no personal property tax, lower grocery taxes, lower commuting costs to the City, cheaper housing. Missouri has much lower property taxes, lower gas taxes, lower sin taxes, more job clusters.

Trade-offs on each side. I have houses in both states. Not much difference in the grand scheme.

We have to stay due to our jobs (at least close by). We get paid much more here than most states for what we do so it evens out in ways. Both me and my husband have pensions so we also fully fund ROTH IRAs and 2 additional retirement accounts to help alleviate whatever does or does not happen with pensions. We have talked about moving to Indiana since he could still work in IL like half his department does, but haven't seriously considered it and I think we will stay.

I remember you considering, but ultimately rejecting, Northwest Indiana when you relocated back here. Would you reconsider that area or just move somewhere else entirely?

What does living in Northwest Indiana do for someone who earns their income in Illinois? I would think not very much.

Yes, we didn't outright reject NWI. We seriously considered a couple homes there before ultimately ending up in the west Chicago burbs. Kicking myself now, but things were different back then so we rolled the dice with high hopes.

I have zillow sending me alerts for Valpo, Chesterton and Crown Point, but there's not much available. I do love the Midwest and would like to stay within driving distance of Chicago/Lake Michigan so also looking at other areas including Grand Rapids. I still have a glimmer of hope that Illinois citizens aren't dumb enough to elect JB so I'm waiting until 11/6 before revving things up.

I fortunately am not tied down to a location since I work remote and get paid the same no matter where I live. I just need to be relatively close to a major airport.

I dunno. You avoid the property taxes which is a rather large chunk of change, and the higher sales tax.
