In a word: drugs. Or in Moscow does that count as economic development?

Enoch, I've spent considerable time in Moscow and own 160 acres. You've just confirmed that I'm making the right choice. Don't worry. I have no desire to come to socialist Finland. What's the tax rate there? 70%? LOL

Just one more reason to stay away. Now if you'll excuse me I have a hot sauna and a rack of cold beer to get through.

I believe you answered your own question with this comment:

You tend to find what you look for. Looks like you went looking for drugs. College students doing drugs. Shocking. Just shocking I tell you.

One can easily look up the crime rate for Moscow on City Data. It is markedly lower than elsewhere. Not exactly indicative of a drug problem. Maybe Moscows drug problem was really YOUR problem?

You didn't refute my response as promised. Noted. Lots of druggies use drugs and don't get busted.

Lots of college students do drugs. Not a shocker. But how someone could find "simple values" in a town with nearly 50% students is simply baffling.

But back to the original question. Do you find loads of Californians piling into Idaho towns a real quality of life improver or not? Wait, don't answer that, you've only been there 16 years. The Californication was already underway by the time you showed up.

What's even more baffling is how some Euro who left Idaho 20 years ago is still spending time thinking about Idaho.

Someone had to leave to make room for you and 50 more Californians.

Yes, I did. You claimed drugs to be a problem. I refuted that claim by pointing out crime stats via City Data are markedly lower for Moscow. Crime and rampant drug use are usually linked. Your reading comprehension is poor. Noted.

College students have the same range of values as everyone else. Many tend toward liberal, some conservative, many in-between. Then there is the other half of the population. Equally diverse. Really this is a pointless debate since the main term, simple values, has not been defined. I will point out that Moscow is strong on education (some of the best schools in the state), environmentalism (excellent small town recycling effort, home of Mary Janes Farm-a nationally known magazine and lifestyle proponent of renewable and sustainable lifestyles), and family activities (Lots of things here...). A town strong on those three things could be seen as having simple values.

Actually the original question was CDA specific, then it evolved into some Moscow discussion. You broadened it. ANd don't worry about my knowledge of Californication. Having lived in Montana for 14 years before moving to Idaho I'm perfectly knowledgeable.

Oh my, how pugnacious we've all become on this thread. How unpleasant. Wonder who it was who came on this forum recently with the "I know everything and you don't" attitude? Hmmmm... Most other forums have fur flying all over the place, but the grumps have been few and far between here. We can all be grumpy from time to time, but most of us know how to rein ourselves in and apologize if we've crossed the line. One way to get back to our friendly, civilized tone is to not become tempted to outgrump the grump...I think I'm just going to go over to the Porch and have a beer and enjoy this spring weekend...
