Add another vote for the blankets, water, food, etc. You just never know what may happen (deer jumps out in front of you and bam-o, your car is banged up), and some areas out in that region can be pretty sparse for population or fellow travelers. Even if we fly out there in winter and rent a car, our first stop is at a local store to get all those things before we head out into the hinterlands.

Oh don’t forget some of these. You’d be surprised how much heat just one can put out in an enclosed space.

Considering I shoot target practice outside, those are always in my car.

I'll second that stop in Riggins, and a prime rib sandwich and a side of cowboy bites at the Seven Devils Bar and Grill. That was a great meal.

I'm just a visitor, not a native, but I didn't find Highway 95 to be all that bad. It was during the fall though, no snow. I would think the area of the highway that would concern me the most during snow is around White Bird.

Give yourself plenty of time. I found myself pulling off the road for the view about every 1/2 mile or so, it seemed.
