Lauderdale is ranked as one of the top 50 most dangerous cities in the country, along with pompano beach, and soon to be deerfield. In the first 7 days and the new year, there was 7 murders. I can gurantee the murder count this year will nearly double. Also, because of the recent violence towards police, Broward has been nicked named "Cop Killer County". If you want to live in a safe city, stay out of Fort. Lauderdale (for the most part), Deerfield Beach, Oakland Park, Pompano, parts of Hollywood, Lauderdale Lakes, and Lauderhill. In Oakland Park, there have already been numerous robbery and drug related murders and assaults. In Fort. Lauderdale, the murders keep piling up, with drugs and gangs infesting the streets. In deerfield and pompano, rival gangs from the cities are killing each other in drive by shootings over turf, drugs, and money. Stay out west if your in Broward County. The east is not safe. The West Palm Beach mayor has noted South Florida as being the most "Corrupt and Dangerous" region in the country. South Florida in all is pretty much bad. I witness crime everyday. I have seen people get murdered, and I have known people who have lost their life to street violence. The east side of Broward County IS NOT SAFE.
As a public safety professional, I have to agree with the original poster. He may sound paranoid, but that's because of what he sees day in and day out. Pompano Beach HAS to be one of the most crime ridden areas in all of Florida. Be careful out there folks ! Here are some good rules to follow. They may seem like plain old common sense to many people, but here are some tips regardless :

1. LOCK your doors at ALL times. Home invasions are on the rise !

2. Get a security system that is MONITORED and put lot's of decals all around your home identifying YOUR home as a protected one.

3. Forget about the interior siren that is weak and that none of your neighbors will hear. Make sure to pay an extra 100 dollars and get an outdoor siren as well. What good is an alarm system if it does not alert your neighbors ?

4. Don't go to the ATM at night !

5. Don't get gas at night !!

6.Install flood lights on each corner of your home and put them on a timer so they automatically come on at night.

6. When driving home and getting ready to pull into your driveway or parking spot, quickly glance in your rear view mirror. If you see someone behind you.....CONTINUE DRIVING. Drive around the block or something and make sure the person is no longer behind you.

7. Don't walk the dogs at night...if you have any.

8. If your a female, get DARK tints on your car....you want to make sure prying eyes cannot tell who is driving.

BE SAFE...the world we live in is full of people that are on the VERGE of commiting crime. Do not be a victim.....be paranoid and be smart.....you will love longer, happier and healthier.

I lived in Hollywood right by the Play house for almost 7 years.
Down the street (Pembroke Road)nothing but violence, where I lived it was old Hollywood and everyone owned there own houses.
And we never had a problem

You're insane.

Tennessee is NOT in poverty.

We have our share of people with low income but at the same time, We have high paying jobs and affordable houses. I live in Nashville and sure, We may have high crime but our high crime is strictly in the city. We also have some of the most influential and richest neighborhoods in the country including Williamson County ( South of Nashville ) which is listed as the 27th wealthiest county in the United States, No counties in Florida topped 40.

Actually, More people flock from Florida to Tennessee to live then probably any other state, I'm from Florida, It seems that everyone you talk to in the Nashville area is from Florida.

Until the mid-2000's Nashville was a nice city, not much crime but things have changed with the recent migrations of people, mostly from Florida and California. We also have seen an illegal immigrant increase of nearly 50% in the last 5 years.

If you want to talk about crime in Tennessee then you need look no further then Memphis. Memphis is constantly in the top 10 for crime and even had their most wealthy neighborhood ( Germantown, TN ) attempt to become their own county to get away from the Memphis/Shelby County school district.

Also, To finish...

I'd like to say that it's pretty sad that Florida has a population of 18M ( at last census in 2006 ) compared to Tennessee's population of 6M basically meaning that Florida has a population three times the amount of Tennessee but Florida has only 6 more fortune 500 companies then Tennessee. I will commend you though, 2 of yours are grocery store chains that only operate in a handful of states

Actually, New Orleans was # 1 in 2007 followed by Detroit and Baltimore for cities with over 100,000 residents.

Yeah, ok, just like crime has REALLY been skyrocketing over the pat 5 years! Yeah, your breaking record lows in Nashville and almost every other city in the US (including in Florida), but it's going WAY up since 2000 because of all them Floridians and Californians, just like it keeps on going "up" (lol) in Florida because of all of them Yankees. Yes I see the murder rate went up but Florida and California aren't high homicide state as a whole historically compared to Tennessee, so I don't know if you can blame them for that one, considering homicide has been way up in most major cities over the past two years while other crimes keep on going down.

Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee (TN) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news

Also, do you care to reference any of your other facts? I believe you (especially about the companies), I just would like to see some solid evidence . Compare Nashville to some Florida cities. It's generally higher although Orlando is a nasty one. And to stay on topic compare Nashville area to Ft. Lauderdale area. Everything was significantly higher per 100 thousand except for robbery which as about the same.

Table 6 - Crime in the United States 2006 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2006/data/table_06.html - broken link)
For comparison tool with comparing other TN cities to cities around the county, here is the national average.
Table 1 - Crime in the United States 2006 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2006/data/table_01.html - broken link)

And concerning poverty in Tennessee, well, looks like it might be true. Poverty in TN is above the national average and (to keep it from going off topic) below the national average in Florida. I can't compare the counties as Nashville tends to be sprawled (so you have high poverty Davidson County, and you have wealthy Williamson County but all of them are way smaller than the county mentioned on this thread, which also is below average for poverty, and about average for crime).

For starters...

In 1963 Nashville and Davidson County merged the City/County Government into one. When you look at statistics for Nashville it includes not only the city of Nashville but also the surrounding communities in the county.

Nashville, Tennessee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I guess I'm not allowed to quote statistics from other sites. On a 1-10 scale, Nashville rated an 8 for both violent and property crime. Ft. Lauderdale ( Just the city of, not including the county, like Nashville's statistics do. ) has a rating of 7 for violent crime and an 8 for property crime.

Ft. Lauderdale at last census was estimated to have a population of 162,917.
Nashville & Davidson County was estimated to have a population of 544,765.

Nashville-Davidson (balance) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau
( Nashville estimated population was done in 2003, not 2006 )

At last census, Ft. Lauderdale estimated 17.7% of the population was below the poverty line.

Nashville/Davidson County was estimated to have 13.3% of the population below the poverty line.

The Median Household income for Ft. Lauderdale is $37,887.
The Median Household income for Nashville/Davidson Count is $39,232.

Most Dangerous/Safest State Award 2007

In 2007, Tennessee was ranked the 5th most dangerous state.
Florida was right behind Tennessee at 8.

These are all compared to Ft. Lauderdale, by population classification, Nashville is rated as a Major U.S. City because it has a population of over 500k. Ft. Lauderdale is not.

Now, If you want to know why Tennessee is ranked as the 5th most Dangerous State and is listed as even remotley having a high poverty level, Look to our neighbors to the west.

Memphis with a population of 645,978 at last census has 20.6% of their citizens below the poverty line and is ranked the 8th most dangerous city in the U.S.

The only Tennessee city to make the top 20.

Orlando, FL made # 11.

To answer your question, Alot has changed since I created this account. We've decided to pick to relocate between Winston-Salem, NC and Galveston, TX.

We love Galveston, It reminds us of Florida only not as expensive and the people are nicer
