Women wanted equality, and now they have it.
Women who are stay at home moms, who didn't go to college, have no skills that would net them "earning a living" - they exist. Many of them are seniors. Seniors are not immune to divorce. A woman who has spent the last 30 years married to the breadwinner, will not be able to survive on no income once the alimony end-date arrives.

A young woman who gets married young and has a kid, whose husband divorces her after only three years of marriage- might not get any alimony at all, according to this legislation. She hasn't lived long enough to have marketable skills, and what difference would it make, if her kid isn't old enough for pre-school anyway? She can't afford child-care to even look for a job, let alone work at one. Child support doesn't include funds for mom to look for work.

"Seventh, durational alimony lasts for a set period of time. It may not exceed 50% of the length of a short-term marriage, 60% of the length of a moderate-term marriage, and 75% of the length of a long-term marriage. An award of durational alimony may be extended under exceptional circumstances based upon the above described 9 factors and a consideration of the following 4 factors. First, the extent to which the payee’s age and employability wholly or partially limit the payee’s ability to be self-supporting. Second, the extent to which the payor’s available financial resources wholly or partially limit the payor’s ability to be self-supporting. Third, the extent to which a payee’s mental or physical disability wholly or partially limits the payee’s ability to be self-supporting. Fourth, the extent to which a payee is the caregiver to the parties’ mentally or physically disabled child. The amount of durational alimony will be the amount that is required to meet the payee’s reasonable needs, or an amount that does not exceed 35% of the difference between the husband and wife’s net incomes, whichever amount is less."

It is rather amusing how reflexive people can be when it comes to our Governor. He could pass a bill banning cancer and all the media would report is that Desantis is throwing oncologists out of work.

I'd complain that he wasted money banning yet another thing just for PR's sake. And if he actually did ban it, like he banned men wearing dresses in public, he'd just end up arresting everyone with cancer, or deporting them, or some such other insanity. Because of course he would, he's desantis.

LOL.....this is totally in keeping with the new gay marriage laws

...should one Dad support another Dad for life?....wife support another wifr for life?...how about trans??

DeSantis is on top of his game with this one....the ONLY problem with it is the libs didn't see this one coming

...it's not a PR stunt to the people having to pay this for life

Thank goodness this draconian practice has been abolished. My husband’s first wife was awarded permanent alimony. One third of his earnings went to her. When he was forced to retire at age 66, we had to go to court and ask the judge to permit him to retire. She opposed his retirement and it cost us $50,000 in lawyer’s fees to fight her in court. The man had a traumatic brain injury and could no longer work. Didn’t matter. It was a nightmare.

Well then you should've worked a tiny bit harder to figure out what to do. Put in a half hour's worth of thought, and a few days' worth of effort.

If someone has a traumatic brain injury and can no longer work, they can go out on disability. If they're 66 years old, they can collect social security and retire. A judge can't tell you that you're obligated to work past the legal retirement age in this country, or that you are obligated to work even if you're permanently disabled.

So either you didn't do your homework, or there's more to the story than this that you're not telling. Or possibly - it's fiction.
