Try taking oral Vitamin B - thiamine. It explains why some people get bit more than others. I got about 100 NSU bites while camping near a mangrove swamp. My husband just got a few. He drinks beer - I don't, he also takes vitamins, including B-complex. Then he suddenly remembered that his GP had said Vit B was good for preventing insect bites. I started taking his B-complex and it really helped!

SkinSoSoft really does not repel them. It is greasy and the bugs drown in it before they get to your skin. If I'm dining outside or at an even I really don't want to get that stuff all over my clothes. I found a new product called No No-see-um that is non greasy and all natural and it really works well. Just stay away from the swarms because nothing works in those extreme cases. http://www.nonoseeum.com/

Products that work on chigger and no-see-um bites include: clear nail polish, dryer sheets, fresh garlic, orange peel, lavender/lemon grass soap, Preparation H, and B complex supplements. The garlic supplement can be taken orally.

Before going in the woods, doing yard work, going to the beach, Spray with Deep Woods OFF dry. Contains 25% DEET. Repels mosquito, tick, flies, chiggers, gnats, no see ums. The stuff actually works.

Default No see ums in your house

I've been battling no see ums in my house for months. Usually they stay outside but somehow I was unlucky enough to have them cohabitate with me. The cold usually kills of the adults but inside a house they are protected from the elements and enjoy a stable food source (us). Free rent and free food - I don't blame them.

Deet helped keep them at bay but did not kill them and it made us sick. Plus... you stink like bug spray all the time. I'll skip all the gory details but bites from these things really hurt (for weeks) and they can be a real health risk.

Now comes the task of getting rid of them. Almost nothing kills these beasts so eradicating them is a real problem.

At first I tried every off the shelf product I could find. I tried foggers which helped for about 3 days. Then after some research I found Onslaught was being used to kill them, so I bought that. It seemed to help but unfortunately did not cure the problem. As it turns out, these things quickly develop immunities to pesticides over just a few breeding cycles.

I hired a pest company to come out and get rid of them. I was told they could "get them under control" but could not guarantee they could get rid of them. They didn't do as well as I did and they charged me a hefty price. Don't waste your money on spray or fog treatment pest control.

The bottom line is; as long as there is a food source (you an your pets) they will continue to breed and reproduce. Chemicals will not kill them.

There are only two treatments that are a sure thing. Fumigation and heat treatment. Neither are cheap but given the choice, heat treatment is safe, non toxic to humans and a better option. Here's a link for more information about heat treatment.
Pest control that's too hot for bugs to handle - tech - 03 March 2010 - New Scientist

Heat treatment heats the dwelling to about 130 degrees. Hot enough to destroy all life and break down proteins in the insect eggs so they die, but not hot enough to destroy any property (except your candy dish of Hershey's kisses).

Save yourself a lot of money, time, grief and physical pain. Once you know you have them in your house, go strait for the throat or these things will quickly ruin your home and your life.

Good advice here, but if I have to sit outside w/ a vanilla air freshener around my neck, I'd rather get bitten. I'll bet they're Yankees or Canadians. You have to have SOME sense of style.
