Several things come to mind.

First - kennel cough

Second - allergies that can be aggravate by drinking very cold water. My vet just told me about that a few weeks ago.

Third - seizures. There are different types. I had a terrier that had fly snapping seizures. We always just thought he was being a goof. Unfortunately it got worse to the point where meds didn't control them and we had to put him down.

Fourth - he's getting something sucked down his throat that's tickling it.

Just to let you all know, Roxy and I just got back from the vet and he believes that it is allergies, and also might be a food allergy because of the licking of her rear end. So I got her some allergy medicine and am going to change to a food that he recommended. Thanks you all so much for your help! I also got her microchipped so I can never lose her. I just feel really bad because the needle was so big!

Did she yelp? If not, it was OK. Usually the vet or the tech scratches the animal's head vigorously and they don't even notice the shot. Or you can do the scratching if need be.

Do you mind saying which food was recommended?

She also tries to vomit but usually cant or only gets a small amount of clear/white phlem. She looks very unhappy while it is happening. Also during these fits she kind of snorts, its deep and through the nose and throat. We have treated her for kennel cough because that is what we first thought it was. Of course she only does it on the weekend when we cant go to the vet. I will call them on wednesday, but I am worried about her because I dont want her to eat something and choke on it. And I feel horrible having to crate her while she is doing it, but it is the only things that helps. Please help me and Roxy! She did it all night long last night.
When I adopted my dog from the kennel she was in solitary and being treated supposedly for "kennel cough" and also a little over a year old........coughing, hacking, wretching and vomiting too.....the long and short of it was it wasn't kennel cough at all.......turned out to be chronic esophagus/stomach inflamation which was discovered when the kennel cough didn't go away with medication.....an external exam won't show this......my vet sent me to a specialist for an endoscope and internal samples of the throat and stomach for biopsy to know for sure.....this will also tell you if theres anything else anatomically or internally wrong. We tried everything for over a year and while we had success for a number of months she relapsed and I had to euthanize her last week. Get your pup to a vet asap and good luck.

I just read through this thread and I will have to call Mom in NJ tonight. She has a 9 year old beagle that has been having hacking episodes for a couple of years now.
This is what I know about her dogs lifestyle...
She feeds her dry Beneful and maybe some table food.
She has her carpets cleaned quite often.
The dogs water intake is limited somewhat due to her having accidents in the home. When she gives her water it is from the fridge and cold.
Due to the dogs food obsession she has eaten many things over the years including plant vines and cold cut wrappers. She can even open cat food cans!
She told me last night that her dog episodes of hacking are getting alot worse.
I am wondering if it is inherrant in the breed. Her Pom used to do it also and I was told it was inherrant in the breed.

Our female Lhasa does something similar, in response to allergens, or when she get something that "tickles" her sinuses, or throat. At times, her whole body stiffens, and it sounds awful. My male did this, before he died ~ from other reasons!

Our vet said it's similar to sneezing, when sneezing doesn't work. The animal is trying to clear its passages. It tends to scare them, and the stress makes it worse.

What we've done is GENTLY cover their muzzle to constrict the air passage just a little, while petting her back and talking soothingly to her, to let her know it's okay, and she's not alone.

Both actually came to us, now, when they felt it coming on. Generally, they've stood with their body's rigid, feet slightly splayed. That's when I know it's time to start the process.

My dog has been doing this for sometime now. I know exactly what you are talking about! My vet did xrays and nothing was showing on them. They were taken of her throat and chest area. We now have my dog on medication called Cimetidine that soothes the asphogus. It is not completely cleared up but has helped alot! She mainly does this at night in bed or whenever she is laying on one of her sides. We will be trying this medication for another 4 weeks to see if it will completely clear it up. She has been on it for three weeks now. If this doesn't work then my vet is suggesting a scope be done.
