Hi!

I was posting about looking for rentals with my dogs in one of the city forums. I own American Pit Bull Terriers and am obviously having some trouble finding a place that will accept my family.

I got alot of good advice and kind words....except for one person.

In a nut-shell they said that all 'pitbull' type dogs are evil, and that they should all be erradicated.

I tried to reason with the person and gave them links to various websites that give a ton of information on the breed. I even gave said person a link to the American Temperment Test Society to show some facts that breed of dog does not matter.

Just a little history. I have been around the breed for about 10 years. I also do rescue/foster for the breed. I am a college educated, responsible, intelligent woman who would never have a dangerous dog in my home.

So, I was told by said person that I was in the minority, that most people hated the American Pit Bull Terrier, and that the media was right about them. I was wanting to know what the concensus was here? Am I in the minority? Do most people think they are evil killing machines that need to be extinct?

I know alot about the breed....ALOT, but it's still curious to me what the general public thinks. Honest answers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Jaime

Some people are scumbag morons, and those people own the Pit Bulls which are trained to be aggressive and make the news every day. The media love the shocking, unfortunate headlines and sensationalize every last drop and then some. How many heartwarming stories do we see on our broadcasts?

My sister found one and he even let a cat come into the house to stay! But when that same cat was on the other side of the gate (as a stray), different story, of course :>).
Neighbors have one. Sweetest thing ever. But all they know how to do is scream at him all the time instead of taking time to exercise & train him.
Personally, I've encountered more intimidating Chihuahas (sp?) LOL.

Default pitbulls

I truly love animals and would never want to see any breed/species become extinct by human hands...I know that in the area where I am...Albany.Schenectady Troy area they are talking about people paying pretty heavy registration fees just to own a pit and many landlords will not even consider renting to a pit owner. I own a white boxer and he has been mistaken for a pit bull from a distance and the reaction of most people is one of absolute fear. The media has it's hand in this relying on one or more cases of pit fights/attacks..it may be true that the breed has been overbred to the point of developing dementia/aggression but all pure breeds have genetic issues to begin with. My co-workers friend breeds only American bulls and she has never had a problem with them. What do you think? anyways...good luck with your search.

I agree that scumbags obtain these dogs...they abuse/neglect/starve them of human attention, then turn them out on the public.

The thing to think about though is that they could do this to any breed of dog. The pit bull just happens to be the dog of choice.

Remember when the Doberman was demonized, or the Rottweiler, or even the St. Bernard after Cujo came out?

To me, it's just the popularity of the breed at this time to young thugs who think the dogs are 'tough'. People forget that all breeds of dog are of the same species. They are canines. We as Humans have made dogs what they are, and we are ultimately repsonsible for their behavior....and fate.

Please keep the opinions coming, I find it all very interesting.

Regards,

Jaime

Take that one person's ignorance, open the door and throw it out into the trash where it belongs.
The stupidity of a lot of people has made this breed of dog hated by many and loved by few. It's absolutely sickening what these animals have endured.
What many of the people in the news fail to disclose is the reason why the dog has attacked ... dog was chained up outside, dog was never socialized, dog was beaten, dog was starved etc, etc, etc. It's the morons who treat them like this who should be euthanized.
Any dog can be vicious and attack if they lack the constant training, love and respect that they so rightly deserve. Just like humans.

Default wrong poll answer

I meant to put each dog should be judged on it's own.

I think people fear what they don't know. They should be afraid of some of the pitts around, and the rotties, and the dobies because of their owners. ANd unfortunately, some are not bred for their temperament. I do worry about some of the breeds, like cane corsos and dogos. because I don't think they have been in the mainstream long enough and they still have too many of their original instincts. They could stand to be more domesticated. I know, each dog should be judged on it's own and not by it's breed tough. I woulnd't ban them, I am just wary.
frankly, the yappy little dogs are usually meaner.

I hate that everyone knows what a "pitt bull" is. Technically what most people call a pitt bull is a staffordshire terrier. Pitt bull was the term used for dogs that fought in a pitt - not necessarily a staffordshire.

Here is an AWESOME test. This is one of the best things I have seen to sow why there shouldn't be breed bans. People don't even know what the dogs are.

It's really sad. I have two 90 lb American Bulldogs and people are always afraid of my dogs before they even get to meet them. (if they only knew what wimps my dogs really are) All they want is lots of hugs and attention even from strangers. Awwwwww...so sweet

Lovebeingme. Is it the Amstaff you own ? Im in a similar situation with my town. Somebody wants to have a ban on all 'pit bull type' dogs. It will never happen but hes got the City council discussing it. I have to go to a public meeting to defend the breed. THe thing is that people in genearl are ignorant.

The thing is, that generally when you see 2+ snarling pitbulls, being agressive towards people and other animals, there is usually a deeper problem within that house. Animal abuse, drugs or whatever. That proble needs to be solved in order to get rid of agressive dogs of that type. They are a fashion accessory to scumbags basically. In most cases, these dogs arenot even true pitbulls but anything bread with an AmStaff or Staff to make it look bigger, stronger and meaner.

What people dont get about pitbulls is that yes they were bred to fight dogs but on the other hand bred to be absolutely obey and trust their master. Remember in pitbull rings there were two dogs and two dog handlers. What good is having a dog handler in the ring if the dogs attack people ?

For the best part, dog / dog agression has been bred out of the IMHO. Though, like any dog breed its essential to socialise them with other dogs from a young age.

We had two Staffs, also known as Pitts they were the sweatest dogs on earth. I am so sad that a great breed as the Staff, is now basicaly vilafied because of the "pitt Bull" stereo type. They are the same dog, just different owners and breeders that raise them wrong. I have seem more vicious poodles!!!

Well I am bracing for another nightmarish night, but this time the nightmare is probably going to includ the face of the dog in the last dog picture , and now i am offically done wasting my time on this thread, hope you find a good house and what you are looking for far away from DUUUUVVAAAALL, and welcome to Florida, a state where people DO realize the danger behind pits.

PS, not that i am actually going to continue on wasting my time arguing, but comparing banning pit bulls to soap? Uhh, it just does not work, sorry. Soap is accidental deaths, pit bulls are viciously rip of your head and eat your body death. same goes with comparing this to slippers?, balloons?, and what was it a bucket? huh? Your arguments are so catchy feely and emotional, but are not fact based, then when the facts are presented by a couple or more studies, both are magically wrong and flawed, and the people that performed those studies changed their minds all of a sudden from pit bulls are highly dangerous and you would be insane to have one to o my god, i love pit bulls and so should you. That doesnt make sense.

Lastly, why the hell would people choose pit bulls as their little victims? When pits first started being pets and started eating people, did these people start off immediately choosing pit bulls to be the "abuse" pet. I mean, come on now, that is the most idiotic and victimish thing I have EVER heard. People buy labs, golden retrievers, beagles, muts, the like to love and adore (for the most part, obviously there are bad owners out there), and then most people who buy pits buy them to abuse them? Why would people choose pits out of the hundreds of species of dogs to abuse. And who said they were the toughest dogs on earth, I would reserve that for Alaskan huskies or some dog that actually does a lot of work in a harsh environment. The pits tend to live in environments where they can have plenty of people to choose from, and they certainly do when they see a tasty one! So lets rise above the awww, I think I am going to go against the grain of reasonablity and majority thought and rebel by buying or adopting pit bulls. Seems like you want to get a rise out of people and to argue your point. Well you have succeeded up to this point with me, but no longer am i staying up til 11:30 to continue to see how far you will push the envelope on this one. Bye bye
I'm not going to repeat myself again with all the reasons why you are wrong, but I'd like to reiiterate Moderator cut: insult. That is all.
