Yeah this is getting hard to plan. We'll have already been out two weeks when she flies back leaving me to my own. Which could be dangerous.

Made a change and hope this is a good idea. Will get up on the Sunday morning (still end of June) and take off from Farmington, NM and take 550 up to Montrose. Then 50 east to Canon City. Keep reading this is a must area to see so I'm spending the day. Depending on my time and how many stops I make along 550 I may keep driving past Montrose to see more of that area heading north then come back down to Canon City.

Since your trip is already complicated with too many options...

We drive 160 through Northern Arizona a few times per year and Im always in too much of a hurry to do this but here is an option that I have not yet done but its on the list.

Between Tuba City and Kayenta, I believe its just a hair over 10 miles on 564 (from 160) to Navaho National Monument.

I highly suggest checking out Monument Valley, it has to be at least once in a life time stop for anyone who wants a scenic view. Jerome AZ is another suggestion someone else made that is highly recommended, you get a backdrop of the red rocks by Sedona from a distance.

Yeah Monument is on my plan for the day I drop the wife at the airport in Phoenix as well as some other areas that way. Then Sunday I am going to do further up CO and eventually over to Canon City.

Why oh why would you overnight in Farmington instead of Pagosa Springs?, or Durango / Silverton (just asking).

Both were on my 7 yr trucking route, Farmington was a nothing, Pagosa was delightful.

If you have the choice of driving through SW CO vs NW NM.... please know what you will be seeing (for hours on end)

Based on advice on several areas I will be visiting. My sleeping spot is only that so a nice town with sightseeing isn't necessary. The route I take from Farmington comes highly recommended by someone I know and trust and I look forward to it. I hear good things about Canon City for the next night. But again, only a place to sleep.

Fair enough. Enjoy your visit, and return soon with your spouse for more highlights.

Unless my vehicle was insured for break-ins, I wouldn't overnight in Farmington.
Same goes for ABQ, I know of one individual who had their entire moving van emptied.

We have overnighted in ABQ numerous times with never an issue. And my LE background can confirm that crime happens everywhere which includes even in the parking lots of nicer hotels.
