I now know that I want to live in the Charleston area. I understand that North Charleston is not a place I want to live. What about Monks Corner, Summerville, Holly Hill or Dorchester? Are they places where a New Englander (Bostonian) can raise two boys? The weather is bad enough but the lifestyle in general is terrible. We need to slow it down a bit. Thanks for any help. Also, I was thinking of maybe buying a mobile home and living in a mobile home park first while we look for a permanent home. Any input? Thanks again.
Renting does seem like the best idea. Thank you. I was also thinking of coming down in April for my first look. Maybe camping with the kids to get a look.
I see many posts that warn people to stay away from North Charleston. I am new to the area, but from what I can see, there are many locations with a North Charleston mailing address that are not scary at all. I personally think it would be a good idea for people planning on moving into the Charleston area to have an open mind and check out the area by themselves. Just my 2 cents.
Parts of North Charleston are fine and are actually zoned for Dorchestor 2 schools.
Exactly.
I find it laughable that so many people assume if the address is North Charleston than they should avoid it.
Personally ... I don't mind.
It means Dorchester District 2 is less crowded and my kids get even BETTER instruction from the award winning schools and teachers and traffic is not as bad.
So keep moving to Summerville and Mt Pleasant by all means. I'm SURE you can find much more affordable housing around those areas.

Because Dorchester High has IB you think it's "award-winning"?
It would appear that North Charleston is also a "cluster" area for Progressives. All good Conservatives should steer clear.
Ok, I am getting ready to move to Charleston at the end of the month from New Jersey, I have a 13 year old boy, and i would like to move in an area that's not like the one i'm moving from. So can someone give me an idea of what area I should possibly stay away from. I'd greatly appreciated it.

We would need to know your budget and what you're looking for in the way of housing. Most of Mt Pleasant or James Island would be fine. A lot of Summerville in the Dorchester 2 School district. If you're concerned about schools, you'll want to check into the high schools. Search the forum or use GreatSchools.org or SchoolDigger.com to get a start on your search.
