i'm looking to make the easy trip from charlotte one of these weekends coming up in the spring and was wondering what the least expensive options were to stay overnight. this might sound crazy but is there a state park nearby that would allow you to just snooze in your car for one night? if not that, set up a tent?
also, at what point do the beaches (mainly folly) start to get pretty crowded?
Beaches like Folly start to get crowded around early April, as everybody comes down on their spring break from up north. The water is colder then (low-mid 60's), and most locals don't go in until around May 1st or so. Also, many of the businesses on Folly (that only open during the summer) wait until just before Memorial Day weekend to open, so that they can get their business.
Lifeguards don't come in until May, because they are all hired from the local high schools.
The Holiday Inn at Folly beach is actually in the middle of a renovation. So be sure to check when the re-open date is. That probably has taken a lot of the cheapness out of the off-season since it is the only hotel (other than that little one with about six rooms 2 blocks in.)
Location: Nothing could be finer... I'm in S. Carolina!!

might want to call the james island county park: Charleston County Parks and Recreation (http://www.ccprc.com/index.asp?NID=274 - broken link) and see if they'd let you camp for a night. they may.
There is a campground on Savannah Hwy. too....near the intersection of Savannah Hwy. (Rt. 17) and Main Rd.....there is a boat sales place next door to it. They allow tents, are within 10 minutes of downtown and are supposed to be very reasonably priced. This one and James Island County Park are the closest two campgrounds to the beaches and downtown (that I can think of). Like someone else suggested, I would also Google camping in Charleston, SC.
The Holiday Inn is opening April 2nd. They are doing a big party on that day, and it is completely renovated, wtih a new restaurant and new steps.
I just rec'd an email from the Holiday Inn on Folly...149 a night mid-week in April. There is also a hostel...go to hostel world .com
