I used to have a cat who would suddenly jump up from the floor into my arms if she thought she wasn't getting much attention. It made life very interesting.

Especially if they're behind you and you don't it's coming . We had a cat once who did that when he was young, and my wife & I had to watch & warn each other. Fortunately he outgrew the habit and stopped doing it around 2 years of age.

I think the jar is pretty much empty from what I can see so I doubt he is getting too much. Now if it was a full jar....that would be something else.
