Vlad Jr injured his oblique like 3 weeks ago so he was going to start in the minors anyways. He should be a regular in the Jays lineup by June 15 if not sooner, barring any further injury.

I missed that, thanks for the info. In reality there was no reason other than concerns about service time to not have brought him up last season. He doesn't have anything left to prove about his ability to destroy minor league pitching.

They said last year why they didn't call him up was because of his "defense." What a load of crap!

Getting back to the topic at hand, I like the Pads decision to start with Tatis on the roster. Worst that happens is he can't hit, so they send him down within the first 3 weeks, and they get that extra year of control back. The best thing that happens is that he gets his feet wet with MLB experience, and who knows, every year there's that 1 team it seems like that comes out of nowhere, and even though I don't think this Padres team fits that bill, it's entirely possible, and having Tatis around for the whole season instead of just 90 games gives them an extra 4 to 5 wins which is enough to jump the Rockies for 2nd in the division and a Wildcard. As I've said time and time again, games in April (and this year March) count just the same as games in September do.

The above over estimates the impact a single player may have on his club's fortunes. Tatis would need to come up with a 10 WAR or more season to add 4 or 5 wins to the Padres total.

Default 1-0

Giants 0 @ Padres 2.

Wil Myers would have a 2 out homer in the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead. The Pads got the second run in the 6th as new Padre Ian Kinsler had a lead off double, and he scored on Myers' single. That was the only time the Padres got a runner to second base, and the Giants only had 1 runner past 1st: with 1 out in the 7th, Gerardo Parra hit a soft grounder to Aaron Loup which advanced Brandon Crawford to 2nd, but Yangervis Solarte would end the inning and the last scoring threat of the game with a ground out to Eric Hosmer. Fernando Tatis Jr. finished 2-3 in his major league debut. Eric Lauer (1-0) allowed 4 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings, Trey Wingenter (1st hold), Loup (1st hold), and Craig Stammen (1st hold) combined to allow 1 hit with 0 walks and 0 strikeouts in 2 scoreless innings, and Kirby Yates (1st save) had his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 9th with 2 strikeouts. Madison Bumgarner (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (1 homer) with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts, the hard luck loser for the Giants.

Game 2 of the series is on Friday evening. Joey Luccesi (8-9, 4.08 in '18) starts for the Padres against Derek Holland (7-9, 3.57 in '18) who takes the ball for the Giants, with first pitch slated for 10:10.
