It’s not the motto itself that’s the issue. It’s the funneling of money to a far right “Christian” lobbying group from the sale of those plates.

My guess is the states have realized there's money to be made in specialized plates. I think it's good we now have choices on license plates. I live in Texas and pay $90 more a year for a black license plate that matches my totally black Mazda 3. The only thing that's not black is the front windshield and the white numbers and letters on the license plate.

I had the AZ Highways plate for a year; it really looked nice in a gold plate frame on the back of my coppery-orange car (now deceased). I also got special characters to keep the lettering brief so most of the sunset picture would show. It was fun but I didn't want to pay for it every year, so I'm back to the regular one.

I've seen several different Arizona plates here in Florida. I thought at first glance that they were some other version, of the many different plates we have in Florida. I don't care what the DMV does with plates, but I have heard the Police nationwide are not fond of all these plates. Makes it difficult for them to identify the state of registration, when they quickly need to.
