Description: Since opening in 1992, the June Fitzpatrick Gallery has developed a reputation as one of the finest galleries for contemporary art north of Boston. More than 35 artists work at the studios in Brunswick (about a half-hour drive north of Portland) in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, poetry, performing arts, and, of course, weaving. Description: The Portland Repertory Theatre (PORT) was founded in 1994 and is a small, part-time company with only one show a year in the summer. Organizers hope to expand PORT as it moves forward, eventually offering two or three shows a year at Merrill Auditorium. Description: A Company of Girls has encouraged girls to explore their theatrical flair for the past decade. Founded in 1996, this nonprofit afterschool program presents traditional and original plays with a cast made up completely of girls ages 8 to 18. Plays that are traditionally staged with male actors are tweaked to allow the girls to take over (take, for example, the company’s recent performance of Lord of the Flies, in which the traditionally all-male cast was played entirely by girls). In the audience, of course, both genders are welcome. A Company of Girls is based at the former Adams School on Munjoy Hill in Portland. Tickets are usually $5 for children and $10 for adults, although prices vary by performance.
