Description: Whitney Art Works, which was originally located on Long Island, New York, moved to Portland in 2003 and was voted “Portland’s Best Gallery” in 2008 by the readers of the Portland Phoenix, the city’s alternative weekly newspaper. The Art Works can be found on Congress Street, in a historic building updated with a sleek, metal facade and sparse, loft-style space inside. The design suits the Whitney, which showcases contemporary artists in a variety of media, including photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The space is home to a gallery with a rotating series of featured artists and hosts the occasional event or performance. Whitney Art Works also provides a range of arts services, like packaging and shipping, and acts as a liaison with major American customs brokers for international shipments. Whitney Art Works is the official shipper and installer of the annual “Arts in the Capitol” show in Augusta, which is sponsored by the Maine Arts Commission.
