duramax loses out to O-470R flat-6 gas burner when it comes to area travels of these distances.

This last week had me seeing ground speeds ranging from 135 mph to 170 mph, making trips from SE WY to Sheridan in a couple of hours each way.

The biggest advantage comes during the winter months when the storm fronts have passed through leaving our clear skies but totally messed up driving conditions .... and if the flying conditions are really poor, it's typically also weather in which the driving is abysmal. The heater in the plane works great.

you'll just have to settle for the abridged versions or a collection of short stories ...

my Pine Bluffs to Sheridan trip last week as 2.5 hours northward in the face of a headwind, and only 2.0 hours back home. Used less gallons of fuel than my RV, and cut a lot of miles off the trip by being able to fly direct point to point rather than meander around on I-80 to I-25 and northward.

considering the time advantage, it made the trip possible on an easy one day schedule; if I'd had to drive, it would have been a three day affair, although I would have made additional sales calls enroute.

Back when my Granddad was on the Sanitaion Board(now the Livestock Board) he could work all day drive out to Cokeville get on the Train sleep get off in Cheyenne the next morning go to his meeting all day then a train ride home only missing one day of work. Me a trip to Cheyenne is a day driving a room for the night meetings then either stay another night or drive most the way home in the dark..

Afton Muni to Cheyenne, 289 n. miles. Absent westerly headwinds, about 2 1/2 hours via C182, give or take a little. I've made it back from there a couple times in 2 hrs flat.

Turns that 3 day trip into a one-day event if you can get off the ground at daybreak, get work done, and return in those hours before dark.

Probably use about the same total gallons of fuel, although AVGAS is running approx $5/gal vs $4/gal for diesel. Time is money .... and without the two overnight expenses + meals.

When I had my plane years ago (one of the reasons I had it) I had business investments, aside from Gillette, in Greybull, Cody, Columbia Falls, MT and Whitefish, MT. I needed to check in with them every now and then, spend a couple hours and be gone. In my Comanche I could do them all in one long day, while on the road it would take most of a work week. In fact, if it was fishing season, it might take more than a week.

Had a ramp mate with a Commanche 260 which I got to fly a few times. That bird would smoke a 182 anytime on cross countries at 30-40 mph faster on the same fuel burn ... but with the limitation that it wouldn't get in/out of some of the back country strips we take the 182 into to go fishing.
