Sheridan is one of my favorite cities in the state. You are close to the Bighorn Mountains which I think are very pretty and as others have mentioned there is plenty to do. You are also close to Billings which has quite a bit going on and if you have to make a major purchase there is no sales tax, however, I think Wyoming will still nail you on taxes on a vehicle. I've been told Laramie is nice although my experience with that town has been going through the McDonald's drive-through once while passing through. I do imagine that it would be more accepting of a gay couple as Sheridan does seem to be pretty conservative (as is all of Wyoming except Laramie and possibly Jackson). However, Wyoming is a pretty live and let live kind of a place and if you are a down to earth hard worker I don't think many people will care about your lifestyle. The most important thing to do is try to check these towns out in the winter if you can. If you can handle the winter summer will be a piece of cake.

As an outsider to this debate I will say that I was in both towns this summer and have been to Laramie several other times as well.

Sheridan is a nicer town in a more beautiful setting. Laramie is kind of a dumpy town in a high plains setting with the mountains in the distance. However, the University is stunning between the architecture and the beautiful spruce trees. Sheridan's downtown in prettier and more quaint. Laramie's downtown is more vibrant and "wild westy".

Both are really cool places. However, the access to Ft. Collins and Denver and Cheyenne tips me toward Laramie (for your situation). Unless you guys are pretty much homebodies I would think that you might enjoy access to those larger communities.

"Laramie is kind of a dumpy town"

I disagree, I don't see anything 'dumpy' about Laramie.

Sorry couldn't help myself.
I went to Grad School at UW, lived in Laramie a couple of more years. Lived in Gillette for a few years. spent alot of time in the Bighorns and Sheridan. My 3 day hike to and summiting Cloud PK, one of the best 3 days, ever. Even better than all the years I spent around the Tetons.

My short 2 cents. Laramie and Sheridan couldn't be more diferent except maybe for the amazing mountains both have access to. Sheridan was always greener than any other place in Wyoming. Laramie has UW which offers big time sports and cutural events. Laramie is windy, very windy, especially in the winter, Sheridan, not as much. Laramie does have access to the Front Range cities but for most Wyomingites, not a big deal. Personaly speaking, I would move to Sheridan but that's just me.

As suggested, and it is suggested many times in a " moving to ____" thread. Only you, the OP, can really judge either, as they pertain to your preferences so visit both. Both diferent but great places to call home.

Dumpy is probably not the right word, but Laramie isn't real fancy or dressed up like a lot of places. Compare Laramie to say Boulder and that was what I was trying to get at.
